Any rider that has turned a throttle grip in anger in a competition event, I.E. road racing, will find the Buell rear brake calibration perfect.

The Uly (either the X or the XT) is not designed as a race bike. They are sport tourers. What works great on a racetrack might not work so good on the street. For example, Chris Carr's XR750 is a dream on a Mile, but it has no front brake. That would not be such a good idea on the street.
I've done some Road racing, and I've done some touring. There have been quite a few times I wished I had more rear brake.

Coming from sportbikes, I can see where you'd wonder about the power delivery of the Uly. Have you had the chance to test ride a Firebolt, an 1125R, or a Lightning?

Maybe that would be closer to the feel you're looking for.

I have two Buells: an X1 lightning for hooliganism and around town stuff, and the Uly for 1000 mile days / transcontinental flights.

I like the Lightning for sure, but it doesn't have the 2-up ability that I need. I can only afford one bike for now. Plus I live in Maine where the roads take a beating during the winter. The extra travel takes away the cringe factor when coming up on a minefield of potholes. That can get a little hairy with a sportbike type suspension! I actually think with the right mods the performance of the Uly won't be far off the Lightning anyway. Same drivetrain, just a little extra weight. This bike has me pretty excited. I can fly thru twisties with my sportbike buds, cruise/tour with my Hardley mounted friends solo or 2-up, and I can goof off (read: wheelies) on the barely traveled backroads. It's a sportbike/cruiser/standard/supermoto/tourer all in one!

Definitely needs a pipe asap though...

Now that someone brought up the brake getting better with miles I wonder. I took some sandy roads and the brake locked up fine. So I may have to reevaluate my opinion once the other roads I want to ride on thaw out so I can give the rear brake another try. I don't need to lock it up on the road but a little more power would be nice.

I never have raced so Teeps could very well be spot on.

good luck on your purchase tuesday driven. got my xt friday and already got 800 miles on it. went out today with the wife and although she understands it's not the ultraclassic, it does give her more room than the m2. and the ride on the back road was better than the ride on the interstate.

i hope you enjoy it as much as i am right now. the only thing i don't like is the high wind screen. if i was taller, it might work better. and since i'm used to the front brake of the buell(having had one since sept.28 2001) it doesn't bother me not to have a real powerful back brake.
