So I am a brand new Uly owner -- I took delivery of my 08 Uly last Friday and have about 250mi on it so far. So, it is still in the break-in period.

The bike is awesome, but I have ridden it fairly carefully and mostly for a 20 mile commute, which includes some stop and go traffic.

On my last (only) two frame-fuls of gas, the fuel light came on at about 120 mi. When I filled it I measured 35mpg ... far lower than I had expected. Is this normal for break in?

Based on what others have been posting, I had been expecting to get at least 10mpg higher than this ...

It's time you do the motoman break-in:
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Oh yea, my '06 Uly returns between 46 & 51 MPG consistently.

It will get better.Should be 46-50mpg after you get 3000miles.First day I got my Uly it was pouring down rain & I remember my light coming on at 125 miles.I get as low as 41mpg(hard riding)and up to 50mpg(60mph cruise)now that it is broke in.

My '07 Uly has never gotten over 44 MPG. I'm usually getting about 42 MPG. I do rod the piss out of it, but even so all this 50 MPG talk leaves me wondering wtf?

Either I'm really hard on the throttle, or I'm just too fat, but I have'nt gotten any better than 38 mpg.

I better try having a salad tonight.

I hit 50 MPG with my 07 Uly pretty regularly. Riding interstate slab at ~80 MPH with the bags on will knock this down a bit. From what's been posted here, the 08's aren't doing this well, but nobody's come up with a reason this should be different.

I can get 60 if I REALLY take it easy, 45 if I ride it like I stole it... it has been like this since the 1st tankfull.

Yesterday, I put 3.9 gallons of Super in my Uly. The odometer read 179 miles. That's commuting in winter/early Spring. In the summer, I get about 5 MPG more.

I have noticed a fairly noticeable drop in mileage lately because most of the stations are now using alcohol in the gas. That irritates me a bit. I did a real close study on my vehicles last summer and fall. The mileage on all three of them drop 8 to 10 percent when running the gasahol. It sucks to pay the same Fu&^%$# high price to get less mileage.

Last year the Uly was always hanging around 175 miles before the light came on. Now it is lucky to get to 140. Same bike, running great, same roads, same kind of riding, different fuel additives.

Uhm 45mpg but I am 16 turns in on the rear pre-load (the poor bike is workin) and half the time I'm driving it like a four-speed! The SUV gets 18, the MR2 26 and the Uly is more fun than both combined and cheaper yet to run

Some stations don't label the ethanol or they labeled it but it "fell off". With ethanol I don't get any more then 140 mile maybe 135. On premium I get better. I will get the best with premium and keeping my mph below 75.

Strangely enough I find I get better gas mileage when I ride it hard than when I try to take an easy on it.

When bike was under 3,000 miles the best I got was 35mpg. Worst was 25mpg.

Now it has over 3k miles; riding really hard - up around redline (when racing) I get 34mpg. Taking it easy (80mph) on open road is 36mpg, and riding around the city is 29mpg.

I don't putter anywhere.

I get bad gas mileage on the highway... On the way home from MBV, I was getting 45mpg if not 40mpg. Down at MBV, I was getting around 55mpg...

Crazy... But hey... it still gets better range than any of the other bikes I ride with... So I'm good.

Low to mid 40's since new. Told the usual about better mpgs after x amount of miles. Still riding and still waiting... one more thing... just purchased a Crossbones. Had to tell someone.

Etenully,
Might that Monster of a windshield have something to do with your lower gas mileage? Just a thought. Cold weather also lowers the mileage.

I think it makes a difference what year bike you have as well. I have heard some repeated concerns about the '08's not getting the same mileage. I have an "06 with 10000 miles on it and average around 46 mpg all types of riding.

I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut until I get up around 5000 miles on this badboy cuz so far, I haven't even reached 36 mpg and it's driving me batty! 140 mile range is nowhere near enough! Hell, my bladder can do three times that!

We'll see what happens as the miles accumulate, but until then, I'm jonesing for a tourtank!

Thanks for the reminder about ethanol. It is all we can get here in Illinois anymore.

I'm still gonna beg Erik for a more fuel capacity when I see him at the homecoming.

2008 XB12X - 32 MPG on first tank. Basic commuting, mostly 60 MPH on a state highway. 41 MPG on the second tank... nice Saturday afternoon ride of "Break-In" miles. I like the direction this is going, but I consistently got 48 MPG on my '06 and I could get in the 50's if I tried real hard (read... had no fun!)

06 X, 38mpg on the first tank. I'm going to run the second tank through without the side bags, to see if there's a noticable difference (most of my riding is, unfortunately, slab). The first tank also included some "Uly experimentation" through some watershed fire roads for about 15 miles, so I'm sure that brought it down a bit.

On my last tank full, (frame full?), I got 162 miles before the little orange light came on and the fuel trip kicked in.
Riding wise, this was for my '06 model during the break-in period and consisted of 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear work revving up to 4,500rpm with 500 miles on the clock.

I was impressed.

'06 Uly here... highest was over 51 riding on flat slab with wife on back (not TOO aggressive riding style!). Lowest was 39 mpg riding with gear and wife on back on steep dirt roads. Typical all around street and dirt is 44 mpg.

This is using California gas...

I was out all day today and ck'd the MPG for the first time. I got 36-mpg between fill ups. Mostly twisties @ 4-5k rpm (a little off road-ish stuff) - I run 94octane.... 950 miles on the OD

08 Naked Uly with 400 miles. 35 MPG on last fill up in 50 degree weather. Fuel light came on at 120 miles. Running it hard during break in (not past 5K RPM -- OK maybe once or twice briefly )varrying RPMs. No where near the 50mpg I hope, but as the engine breaks in it should improve....I hope. If not, 35mpg still ain't bad.

I've got 2500 miles on my Uly and I am getting right around 30-35 mpg. I just filled it up today and the mpg stood at 31.8. Not the best, but I ride it hard and never bought it for the fuel economy.
