In the process of my header / muffler upgrade I figured I would replace the plugs while the engine is rotated. I'm no expert but the plugs sure look different. Would you say the front plug looks fouled? About 4,300 miles on these plugs. It didn't seem to be running poorly and has not been hard to start. What say those with more experience? Left = Front, Right = Rear

Yep, by my book that is nicely fouled... How old are the plugs? I've never seen a picture of the exhaust exit ports - whats that ridge of silver on the front one? |

7 Months, 4,300 miles Thats a bit of the crush gasket. Looks a little lopsided too me also. That will get replaced when I put the header back on. (Message edited by 08uly on April 05, 2008) |

Doesn't take too much thought to say the front jug is rich. Bad fuel/air management going on here. Show the pics to someone who "knows" Buells. |

If it's still hitting on both cyls the plug is not fouled. It looks like the tip of the center electrode is fairly clean, indicating its still firing. HOWEVER- the front cyl definitely shows signs of running a lot cooler/richer than the rear. The best way to read plugs is to have the engine warmed up then run it at full throttle to near redline in a higher gear (several seconds worth) and click it off while pulling in the clutch and coasting to a stop with the engine not turning. Pull the plugs and have another look. Admittedly this is difficult to do in a lot of urban/suburban settings but thats the only way to get a good "read". |

That's odd. I wonder if the front injector is being too optimistic? All of the sensors for the engine are connected to the rear jug and the front is supposed to mimic it. This might be a good time to call Buell customer service and just ask about it. You know, just put yourself on record as having noticed something? |

Can that be fixed with ECMSpy? |

Just asking, but you never know, are the plugs the same part number? I've been sold the completely wrong plugs before at the dealer... Also, my '06 with 46k+ miles has never had a plug as sooty as even your rear plug looks. My 10R12A's have always looked pretty good except for expanded gaps at 10k mile changes, fronts a nice tan color and rears slightly lighter. Are your plug wires from the coil nice and secure? I learned early on the clips to the plugs can seem snapped on fully but actually not, same at the coil ends. That front jug is definitely not burning all the fuel sent to it in any case though. |

looks like there could be a header leak. go to irridium or platinum plugs, too. A fouled plug just won't fire at all. for some reason, the front jug is running rich, the back jug is fine. |
