Hello all,
I’m a first time poster, but I've been learning from you all for over a year. As a matter of fact, you all are part of the reason that I bought my Ulysses. So, I've got a 2006 that I bought from Low Country H-D/Buell and it only came with one key for the ignition, and one for the saddlebag. I took the keys to a for-real locksmith shop. They couldn’t hook me up with a saddlebag key at all. The locksmith thought that a Volvo key might work, but he was skeptical for good reason; it didn’t work after all. I did a little research on the board and discovered that others have had success with Volvo keys for the ignition, and that the lock mechanism is made in Italy by a company called Zadi.
My question is do any of you know what info I can provide to a locksmith that will definitely get me a key blank that will work? Thanks, I hope to meet up with some of the SCBR folks soon.

I tried the same thing with the same results. Just order from your Buell dealer. It worked.

Buell dealer is cheap - $35 (at least compared to an Audi key) or so for two, just make sure you have your registration with you when you order them in person

Busykat,

Congrats on your Uly purchase. Man, we're getting a slew of Uly's in the lowcountry.

BTW, did your Uly have a Corbin seat and some various Touratech pieces in addition to the Drummer? If so, I might be able to put you in touch with the original owner. Maybe he's still got some of the keys.

Be sure and introduce yourself in the SCBR forum. You should have come to MBV with us!

Hughlysses,
Right you are! The XB12X is the kind of motorcycle that I would've wanted to conceive if I was a designer. It's no wonder they’re getting to be popular here. We just need to help Low-Country keep faith in the product. Buells do seem to be a red-headed stepchild there.
I would like talk/ meet the former owner and would be grateful for the help. When I asked Tony why the former owner sold, her, he shrugged his shoulders and said he's independently wealthy; traded it for a Softail. I’ve known some folks like that. Even if he doesn’t have any of the parts left, I’d like to just fill in the blanks on the history of my bike. Thanks!

Busykat,

I'm pretty sure I traded a few e-mails with the guy right after he got the bike. I was very surprised to see it sitting for sale at Lowcountry a few months ago. The former owner runs an auto glass shop here in Summerville. If I can find his info, I'll PM you.

Busykat,

I found his Badweb handle: Jeff1216

If you do a search using that username, you can find a bunch of posts showing the progression of mods on your bike (and you can PM him and get his name via his profile). He must have not kept it long; his last post was in 2006. I remember I e-mailed him after I saw the bike at Lowcountry and asked him about it, but he never responded. You might be able to find him in the phonebook or figure out which glass outfit he runs.

As far as replacement keys for the luggage go, contact twisted throttle. There is a keycode (9xx) on the key. Give that number to them and they can get you a new key for the HB luggage. The sad part about HB luggage, is there are only about 6 or 7 key numbers, so a lot of the keys will fit other units too.

As far as spare keys for the bike, I would demand that Low Country order you a spare set of keys. All you need is the VIN and Buell will hook you up with a set. We had to do this with my wife's Blast which only came with one key.

You could get a blank off eBay and take it to a locksmith to have it cut.

Wayne,

Sorry, but Twisted Throttle can't supply replacement keys for the Buell H-B bags. If you had tried, you would know that too. Go to your dealer and either buy them or get them to supply them. All this off-brand searching isn't worth it for these keys. Any dealer can supply them. I didn't get them at the dealer where I got the bike.

Go ahead with ebay if you have a 2006 Blast or Fireball. Those are the only Buell models listed for the ebay blank.

There you go. I learned something. I have ordered replacement keys for non-buell HB bags, I just assumed that since they are standard keys they would have them. Well, as they say assume = .... well you know the rest.

Yeah, those pesky assumptions have bitten me in the a** in the past too. Buell apparently has worked out an exclusive arrangement with H-B.

Caveat Emptor... The blank that Chadhargis links to looks good to me. And it seems Italian (like Zadi), and everything that needs a key on my brother's KTM looks the same on my Buell. But of course I could be all wrong. And what the heck is a Buell "Fireball"?

There you go. I learned something. I have ordered replacement keys for non-buell HB bags...

Are you saying you DID order HB case key blanks? If so, how do you know they won't fit the Buell/HB case locks?

I lost a main key and ordered up 2 sets (4 keys) from a dealer, part no. Y0732.T, since it seemed like a deal at $20/set. That part number in my parts guide shows two keys with molded grips linked together, and I was told the part number applied to the linked pair as a "set".

Imagine my surprise when I went to pick them up, suddenly when the "set" is ordered (and they only sell them in pairs of keys) that $20 per set becomes $20 per KEY of the set! Instead of the 4 keys I thought I was shelling out $40 for I got 2. Even the guy I dealt with at the counter thought that was to be the case.

But apparently HD had changed the policy and he didn't know it... like I said, Caveat Emptor...

They don't sell HB case blanks for Buell bags. You order by the code and you get a cut key. Twisted Throttle cannot get keys that have the Buell codes. Please go to the dealer and end this thread.

You know what? It hasn't cost me anything other than a little time to type in a question, and then do a little research. I haven't gotten a replacement key yet; however, I have gotten some good info from Uly riders that I hope to meet someday and call friend. What I haven't lost is $40 for a pair of keys. I may still have to spend it, but in the meantime, I don't mind trying to see if there is an alternative. Who knows, maybe I'll find it and save me and some others some money too. Till then, it's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase.

hi there Busykat FWIW, I just ordered a pair of spare ignition keys for my 06 from the dealer for $13.64 plus tax since previous owner hasn't quite come round to mailing the spare out.

Gotj, with all due respect, the call of my question directed to Wayne was clarification since his post implied that he had actually ordered case keys. Main key issues aside, I would think (and no I haven't tried) that any vendor of HB case sets should be able to get spare key blanks. If not, well that's another strike against Hepco-Becker IMMHO.

And really, when has going to the dealer been the solution to "end threads"? Why do we need to "end" this thread? Interesting info is what I'm reading here.

Some of the experiences of "going to the dealer" have resulted in great threads here that have even, somehow, produced solutions by BadWebbers.

Sekalilgai, better check again on your key order. If you're paying $13.64 for the set of two, you may be coughing up another $13.64 at pickup time. Like I posted above, HD's computer accepts the order at a "one-key" price for a "two-key" part number, therefore doubling the cost at pickup of the coded and cut keys.

At least that was the way they explained it to me... Not the way I would do business.

Not blanks, but replacement keys. I have a complete set of Hepco-Becker bags that I put on my wife's bike last year (before I had the Uly). Because of how and when I ordered them, I had to get a new cylinder for the top case. Then I ordered some extra keys for everything. You order by the key number. Since this was an easy process, I assumed you could simply order replacements for the Buell branded HB cases. However, it seems that you can't do this without going through HD.

Thanks Wayne.

So, pardon my density, then the locks (therefore the keys) for your wife's HB's differ from the Buell HB's?

The person at Twisted Throttle told me yesterday (I had to call about something else), that the key number range for the Buell OEM luggage is in a different key number range. So, just like you can stick many Chevy keys into many different Chevy cars, only certain keys will open the door... So, my blue Buell key fits the HB locks, it simply won't open them however since they aren't keyed the same. Likewise, her red HB key fits into the Buell bags, but won't open them.

Thanks for that, so Gotj's conclusion about a Buell/HB arrangement appears reasonable.

So if the keys will inter-fit the locks of both type bags, I'm guessing they're the same contoured blank. Answers my question, thanks!

I found a replacement key! Call your local locksmith and ask them if they have any ILCO X270 key blanks. If they do, ride your Uly down there and have them cut one key from yours out of the X270 blank.
Al at A-1 Locksmith Service cut the key, went to the bike to ops check it. It didn’t work at first. He took the key and had another go of it on the machine and viola, the key worked. When I asked him what he did to get it to work the second time, he explained that it just needed to be cut a little deeper…it was real easy for him.
Here’s where it gets interesting. I had a choice of two keys to use! They actually had a listing for the Buell in their books and offered me a key that looked like a generic version of the blue, Pegasus key, or for a buck less, the X270. I like my keys to be slim and light, so I opted for the X270. I may even lighten it and/or slim down the head to make it more compact. It cost me $5.70 for two. Now, what am I going to do with the money I saved?
