Gas is $3.50 per gal because the US Senate, under influence from the tree huggers fretting over global warming, uh excuse me climate change. (global warming morphed into climate change when temps started going down and snowfall and low temps began setting records) Anyway, the senate voted to not open up ANWR for oil exploration. As a result, opec charges as much as they want and produces as little as the want. No market forces. If we opened ANWR, oil prices would fall just low enough to make it uneconomical to drill domestically. Has nothing to do with who is in the whitehouse.

Also, hold onto your wallet, because of gov't subsidies for ethanol, food prices are sykrocketing. Getting that gov't "cheese" for producing corn is way better then growing food in a competitive market where there is risk.

It's the libs and the ecowacks that are to blame for high gas prices. My $0.02

Jwnsc,

I really do not care to discuss politics in this forum. I am sure my memory was a bit fuzzy regarding the exact dates the national speed limit was implemented and I apologize for correcting you when I was wrong about the date and who implemented the national speed limit.

But your posting got under my skin for a number of reasons beginning with the condescending phrase "Au contraire, if .............." and calling the occupant(s) of the Oval Office a shill, accusing them of not caring about the American people or National Security, being irresponsible, manipulating the stock market and trashing the environment among other atrocities I just felt compelled to say something.

The part of this whole thing that irritates me as that there is existing technology that can be used to convert everyday trash into oil.

There are one or two of these plants operating now. It is estimated that using this technology could produce about 4 billion barrels of oil a year using just agricultural waste.

I do not have the link to the companies web site, but if you Google "trash to oil" you can find the info.

I stick by my $5.00 per gallon by the end of summer.

It has nothing to do with the occupant(s) of The White House.

Simple economics.

I'm sticking by under $4 by the end of the summer (here in Columbus). People have been telling me "It'll be $4 per gallon by this summer, or by this winter" for 4 years now, and it's still $3.20.

It does annoy me how much profit these companies are making, but in the end... I'd rather them make their money, than have all the cars on the road be these huge SUV's getting 10 mpg.

I love that Airborne photo...thanks for attaching it. One of my riding buddies is a Screaming Eagle, and he's damn proud. He's also sitting on a beach in The Marianas, doing security clearance investigation work. Nice.

The photo I should have attached was the pump showing $5.60 per gallon in Gordo, California, in the heart of Big Sur. My girlfriend and I went from San Francisco to San Simeon and back this weekend (and had a buhhhhhlassssstttttt) on a rented Electra Glide (saw a Uly in Santa Cruz on 3/29), and needed some gas. 3.6 gallons at $5.60 and we were ready to march, except we WEREN'T! She and I aren't yet affected by the rapid increase of the price of gas...it doesn't quite hurt enough! I drive 50 miles per day for work, and that sucks, but I haven't seen it hit me yet because I'm a "white collar" guy, single, with no kids. In the near term, we'll ALWAYS make room for gas costs! My biggest economic/financial worry is my retirement, my share of Social Security, getting the most out of selling my house someday, keeping the governments from raising property taxes pell mell (the MOST insidious of taxes!), and being able to retire at an able age. If I were smart, I'd eat out less!

Being on the road to a secure marriage, having no kids, and having parents who are financially secure, I'm in pretty good shape, which makes me feel guilty when the thin, grizzled, 30-something guy who was pumping my nearly six-dollar gallons of gas in Big Sur said, as we topped off and saddled up, "I need to try to save up for one of those again - I used to have a Sportster. You guys look like you're having a great time." It just hit me that plunking that kind of money down - for gas and for an expensive rental - means you need to remember how lucky you are during this short life.

Things are not getting cheaper. Things are getting more expensive. And for many people, their incomes are not keeping pace and haven't done so for the last couple decades.

Fascinating string...
Big Sur

Aren't Harleys great for eating the miles. I only wish my glide were as fun as the ULY.

EG, you are so damn right. My girl loved the back seat on that Electra Glide, but I had a hell of a time leaning through and powering through those twisties like I wanted to. I dragged the kickstand on the left and the floorboard on the right so many times (which is fine - I know my limits) on the ride this weekend but it was just fine.

The alternative would have been a BMW R1200RT (and I already chimed in on a post about this), but it really was all about her comfort (and that luggage space is fantastic on the EG!). I wish the rental had a sound system - there's nothing like playing some Marillion, Pink Floyd, Rush, King's X, Peter Gabriel, and random jazz on those speakers as you float through the curves! In fact, I think I might start a string about best riding music!

On another note: thanks, EG, for your encouragement after my "bambi-strike" in February. My Uly is back in shape at the dealer, and - apparently - I'm back in shape as a rider - physically and mentally. I just finished 500 miles on one of the curviest and intimidating roads in the country and did just fine, with a passenger on the back no less.

You gotta' get out there! Eat those miles!

What TV motorcyclist road over the Bixby Creek Bridge every show?

Did anyone catch the top 5 oil execs today trying to explain to Congress
(and the American people) why they are making record profits yet spending
peanuts on renewable energy research?
(e.g. Exxon $40 Billion in profits/$10 million on renewable energy)
It kind of reminded me of the time when all the tobacco execs were
testifying that they had no knowledge that their product caused lung disease.
Some congressmen(Democrats) were so incensed they threatened to take away
the $18 BILLION in tax cuts the last Republican Congress gave them.

While I understand the taking away of tax cuts because with $40 billion in profits you really don't need them, I don't understand why they should have to explain why they are not spending more of there money on renewable energy. They are oil companies thats what they do and know, they are under no obligation to fund or research renewable energy. My question is why aren't WE investing more in renewable resources, why aren't WE buying more fuel efficient vehicles so we spend less on gas, why aren't WE joining together to get ourselves out of this situation. We are a country of inventors who have always come through when the chips are on the table. You don't have to look at the current government or ANY of the lakies who would like to run this country to see they are not going to do anything. What ever happened to JFK's "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." seems like anymore it is more like "ask not what I can do for myself but what will my country do for me"

"What TV motorcyclist road over the Bixby Creek Bridge every show?" Jwnsc

My guess, and it's just a guess, would be Bronson in his "Then came Bronson" show. I actually never saw the show, but I know he rode around the country, it was part of the plot.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner!
Bronson is right. Actually, a good argument could be made that he might choose
a Uly if he were to set out today. His 883cc Ironhead Sportster engine is the granddaddy of our Thunderstorm and for some of the off-road stuff he did, he wouldn't have to switch over to a two-stroke thumper Jawa CZ look-alike.
