I'm going to have the header ceramic coated and want to go with something other than the usual suspects (Black, silver).

I'm thinking about Copper or Blue... What do you think? I still have the original Blue plastics so if I went with the blue and used the blue plastics, that might look cool.

I Photoshop'd some pictures to get an idea of what it might look like:

Copper

Blue

Stock

the blue is bitchin especially if you have the plastics to match.

Your red doesn't match the copper sample I saw. If the sample I saw holds true I think it would be a great color. I planned on doing the copper color but ran afoul of a few other projects and it has been put off for awhile.

Hmmm, between copper and blue, I would have to say...BLACK!

I think I read somewhere either on this
forum or maybe the American Sport Bike site,
that any color other than silver has reduced
thermal insulation properties. Of course,
that's not an issue if the coating is purely
for cosmetic reasons.

Jwnsc, you're correct. As a matter of fact, any color other than silver can potentially make the pipes run even hotter (on the leg) than a new stock set of pipes...or so the Buell gods have told me. Chose wisely.

-Indiana Jones...get it? Oh never mind.

Wow... I really like that stock color!
Hucum mine doesn't look like that??

I'd have to go along with Uly1080 on the color choice if you're going to coat it.

That's curious... Jet-Hot explained to me that the colors are applied on top of the Sterling Coating (silver). What factors could make it hotter? I'll have to ask them. If anything you'd think black would then run the hotest.

I sent my exhaust out to Jet Hot and had both the headers and muffler ceramic coated black. The coating is very durable. I didn't notice any change in the amount of heat, but the muffler doesn't rust any more, and the black headers look a lot better than the stock stainless did. I'm very happy with it.
It's your bike and your exhaust system. Make it look and feel like you want it to. Whatever change you make, someone will tell you it's ugly, and someone else will rave about how beautiful it is. And, once it's done, someone will tell you that you could have gotten it done for half of what you paid.

08uly, if that's the case then I'm not sure. My info is coming from Al at American Sport Bike who is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to these matters. Give him a call if you get a chance and still have questions and you may find him most helpful. I think he may soon start charging me for his time and expertise (and rightfully so).

It isn't the insulation (i.e., thermal CONDUCTION) properties between the different colors that are different, it is the radiation properties that are different.

Want to make a good radiator of heat? Make the surface flat black.

Want to make a poor radiator of heat? Make the surface shiny white or silver.

Read more here:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/175883.html

Radiation heat transfer isn't affected by the distance, or the gas or lack thereof that it is traveling across (which is a good thing, or we'd be living on an ice ball). It is only affected by the temperature differences (more correctly the differences of the fourth power of the temperatures), the emissivity of the source, the absorbtivity of the sink, and the view between them. For lots of heat transfer problems, you can almost neglect the radiation component, because the delta T's are small. In the case of the heat moved from a header to the frame or your leg, I can assure you, you don't disregard the amount moved by radiation. If the emissivity of the source is doubled due to surface color, the amount of heat transferred is doubled. Its a linear term in the equation.

My Uly is black, my X1 (will be) silver. The copper color I saw would probably look fantastic in the color I saw it, but the red you have doesn't quite match. Blue with the orange plastics = not so much. Personally I'd go copper or black.

Thanks for all the feedback...

The blue would be a flat finish so not sure about that but I matched the colors based on the Jet-Hot samples (added to the OP above). Monitor color temperatures will effect the display so what you see may not be what you get i.e. more red look to the copper.

Thanks Al for the detailed explanation. I'll have to ask Jet-Hot if the sterling also goes on before the blue. They definitely said the copper was Sterling with copper topcoat.

I have the blue from jet-hot and I think it helps with the heat and looks great.

Sure is nice and distinctive looking. Devil's Tower is a great place to visit except during Sturgis week.

Dropped the header off at Jet-Hot today.

Copper no longer available (problems with it cracking).

Looked at the samples they had and it was between the Blue & the Sterling. I asked about having them re-coated if I wasn't happy with the color. He said they could do Blue on top of Sterling but not Sterling on top of Blue (without having the Blue removed completely). The extreme sterling (good to 1700) has sort of an orange peel finish and not as bright as the sterling (good to 1300). The Blue is a flat finish.

So, decided to go with the Sterling and if I don't like it, have the Blue done later.

I'll post some pics once I get them back next week.
