John, I missed the info on this EG Oil Temp Dipstick. Please fill me in: Where can you buy it? Got a pic or a website that I can take a look at? How much do they cost? Thanks.

Contact 'Electraglider_1997' (EG) here on this forum - he was selling them a few weeks back ... very nice.

Sorry for the crappy foe-toe

Mine stays pretty much stays above 200 degrees.

My '08 has under 2000 miles on it.

My experence with my '06 was as the bike approached 5000 miles, it ran MUCH cooler.

I'm assuming my '08 will start running cooler as the miles pile on.

BTW, Johnboy, how many miles is on your Uly?

What do you guys think is the reason the bikes run cooler at 5000 miles than 2000? Are you saying they are not yet fully broken in at 2000?? So at what mileage would you think they become fully broken in at? I just always thought 2000 or 3000 and and it's definitely broken in. Wouldn't expect any more wear and tear after that unless I don't change the oil often enough.

My '06 continued to run better and gain power up to approx the 5000mi mark. The fuel mileage improved as well, and the cooling fan ran MUCH less, too. LOTS of high speed freeway riding and warm weather seemed to help the process along.

I'm no expert or mechanical engineer, so I really do not know why that is, but my butt dyno is positive that my '06 engine continued to run better with age. Furthermore, when I traded the '06 in on my new '08, the '06 had almost 47,000 miles on it and ran unbelievely good, and delivered excellent fuel economy.

I'm looking forward to getting past the 5K mile mark on my '08, because it does not deliver nearly the fuel economy, and cooler running charecteristics of my old '06.

That 1203 Thunderstorm is one tough some' bitch, IMHO.

One more thing: I went to syn 3 at 5000 miles. That combined with a well broken in engine I think helps the engine perform better.

From what I've read, there's a school of thought that says these engines aren't really broken in until they reach 10,000 miles - but there again, this is the internet... reader beware.

When I tore into my 06 with about 8000 miles on it, the cross hatching in the cylinders was still very visible. Can't speak for the bottom end, but with the exception of the tops of the pistons, combustion chambers and the intake valves everything looked very near new.

I have yet to see 200 F under any circumstance.

I typically see mine in the 170-180F range for around town riding. I haven't done any long highway runs since installing. I will give it a full test next month on the way up to Barber Motorsports for the AMA races.

BTW...'06 Uly w/ 31,000 miles, Race can and ECM, Mobil V-Twin 20W-50W.

I ended up in W. Virginia earlier this PM on some back roads and the oil temp. hovered around 160-165deg all afternoon. It was 39deg out when i left.

So far I seem to be running 160-170deg on back roads and 190deg. or so, in traffic.

Right about now EG's sayin' ..geez, i wish i hadn't sold him one of those things... too late!

Johnboy,
Actually I really enjoy hearing that you're finding it a useful device to look at. Like I've said before, I look at the oil temp most every time I get off the bike. Just hate it when I don't ride long enough to get the oil temp up to operating temp.

I have trouble getting my dipstick all the way in as well... nothing to be ashamed of.

That is not at all unusual. We have taken engines apart with over 115000 miles and still have very visable crosshatching. That shows you just how little wear is occuring in the cylinders, which is fine by me.

EG- do you have any of the oil temp dipsticks left? Was touring Northern California/Southern Oregon the last three days, road closures from the fires (320 square miles and counting) forced us inland to the valley with 110 degree temps on the superslab. The bike ran like a champ, BUT I would love to monitor the oil temp. If you're OOS, that's fine, too.

Thanks in advance,

Randal
