the 08 uly has a different head temp sensor it is around 450F part# P0278.4A8 it should run less than the 06 or 07. My 08 will run only shut the motor off.

I thought the EEPROM w/in the ECM established fan on/off run times ....no?

I think I did hear mine come on while I was riding once, but it always (when warmed up enough) comes on - on my XT - after I turn it off.

I'd say the larger and better oiling system and higher fan on temp setting makes the difference.

Mine runs all the time. Don't care. I'm glad that they fixed the fan problem for the 08+ models.

I believe the difference in the oil pump was to compensate for the higher red line the new Uly has. I don't think it will lubricate the engine any better than the old engines did at normal speeds. Just my take on it but I don't recall the older ones ever having an issue with the lubrication system.

The oil system circulates faster due to the higher capacity drive gears in the oil pump. The oil cooler is also larger. My understanding is that they oil is circulated more often and cooled more effectively as a result of the new system. This keeps temps lower and causes the fan (in addition to the higher cut on setting) to run less. The new oil pump capacity isn't simply for the higher redline.

The oil has a much more important role than just lubrication. My understanding is that there is an oil spray that is directed at the bottom of the piston to help pull head from the combustion chamber and into the oil to be carried out to the cooler.

Treads can correct me if I'm on crack.

Just run synthetic oil and ignore the fan. I can't tell you the last time I noticed my fan running while I was riding. I wear earplugs, so I can't hear it until I stop and turn off the bike.

I have a fan on my Gixxer 600 as well, and if I'm puttering around in traffic, it will come on and blow air through the hot radiator right on to my left leg. At least the Buell exhausts to the rear of the bike.

The worst was my FJR1300. God help you if the fan came on. I remember on a 100 degree day having to pull over, not because the bike was overheating, but because I was getting light headed from heat exhaustion.

The only real complaint the writer had with the XT in this review (http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/Article_Page.aspx?Ar ticleID=6153&Page=1) was with the heat exhausting on to his leg...

"...One issue with the Buell's touring rider comfort which can't be ignored, however, is the engine heat which roasts the rider's right leg. It's not slow-roasted BBQ hot, but it is hot. On a summer day, it could cause some discomfort."

I can hardly wait to get mine in summer stop & go traffic here in the D/FW area.

..or this little slip of the writer's pen:

"...things that make a Buell a Buell: Oil in the swingarm, fuel in the tank..."

'cuz we all know that only Buells keep gas IN THE TANK.

I was just reading my manual about lubrication and it is a 2006 model. Cylinder wall, piston, piston pin, timing gears, bushings and main bearings are lubricated by oil spray thrown off the connecting rods and crankshaft. I don't know what the new book says but I would be interested in knowing. The specs for the 06 oil pump are 1000rpm 7-12 psi and at 2500rpm 10-17 psi. I understand that the pump can deliver a lot more pressure but that is dependant on how much resistance is in the lines and galleries through which the oil flows. There are 2 trains of thought on oil flow. Some prefer pressure and some are of the volumn is better school. Does anyone know how much more pressure there is in the new engine?

In the 08 shop manual, it says, on page 3-71

"oil pressure at operating temperature should be between 10 - 16 psi at idle"

and

"oil pressure at 3000 rpms, at proper operating temperature, should be between 20 - 28 psi"

Thanks California. Looks like they are getting a lot more flow in the new engine. They should last twice as long as forever lol.
