GOt bored with the crap weather and had a few bucks, so I ordered the Touratech footpegs. Did the Ejii shifter mod (pics later) and got right up to the point of putting the left peg on - what a complete pain in the ass. I think I have spent 3 hours trying to finagle the pin through and still no luck.

I will get it though, and I will exhaust every foul word in every know combination during the process.

If anyone knows a magic spell to get it done - that would be neat. Otherwise consider this a pure rant.

When I had a set, I used a large phillips head from below to align the window. Worked out just fine. Took some doing, but it wasn't too bad.

I had the same problem. It was a HUGE pain in the ass. I just fiddled with it until I got it. I scratched the heck out of the mount while doing it too. There is a thread on it somewhere here. I think what I did was get a bolt the same diameter as the hole and cut it so that it was flush with the top and bottom of the new peg. I then put the spring in the peg and pushed the bolt through them both so that the spring was installed in the peg. That kept the spring in place within the peg. I then lined up the assembly into the mount itself. I then lined up the pin in the hole and pushed it in so that while I was pushing it in, the bolt was sliding out. It has to be one slow fluid motion otherwise the f'n spring pops all the time. I think I held the spring in place with some vice grips. It was a major operation, but I got it eventually. It was well worth the effort. Those pegs make it feel like you are standing on 2X4's and you will NOT slip while standing if you tried. I did have to shorten the shifter lever on mine to make it comfortable to shift. That made it hard to find neutral, but it;s still worth it IMO. I hope this helps.

P.S.
Try to use the F word a lot while doing it. It seemed to help me. Also, a few beers calmed me enough to chill and not totally lose it.

I purchased my pegs from American Sportbike, they went on with no problem at all, good quality item. Like the Touratechs, they greatly improve grip, now you can steer like a dirt bike by weighting the pegs w/o worrying about slipping off. Especially in the wet. One of the best mods I have done so far.

Nipsey, let us know what you think. I tried the American Sport Bike pegs and didn't like them so switched back to stock.

YES...the left peg was a bear! It took and hour, a lot of sweat and massive amounts of the F word. With all of that said, they are very nice, your feet won't slip and luckily you only have to install them one time!

There is a technique for putting on the pegs, once you learn it, it's pretty trivial.

First, no hammers. If you use a hammer and try to force it through, you'll just end up raising a burr and compound your problems.

Push the spring down into position with your thumb, put the peg in and start it into the spring. This part is generally pretty easy and shouldn't present much of a problem. But if you're fighting this step, a screwdriver from the other side to lever the spring down might help.

After the pin gets past several of the coils, this is where it starts to fight back. What you need to do is push the spring tang with a screw driver in towards the center of the bike. This will let the pin move past the last two spring coils and into the hole on the other side. It is much easier if there is someone to tap the pin through (hammer NOT necessary) while you're pushing on that tang, but I can do it without a helper.

It's much easier on the 06 and later bikes because there is a bigger chamfer on the end of the pin.

Thanks for the input Everyone - it is done, much swearing was had by all. I compounded my problem by being a bit forceful with the spring and it got a bit distorted. Final solutions was cutting a piece of a bolt to hold the spring in place, then pushing the bolt through. A complete pain - and the post pin festivities were almost a scene from Caligula, complete with dancing goats and cherubs. The hammer was my undoing Al, I have now sworn off of them!

So here is what I did (much thanks to Ejii and Andrejs2112

First cut the shifter

Then ground it smooth and round-ish

Drill and tap - 8mm x 1.25 with a bit of JB to hold it in place and secure the toe rubber...gotta have a secure toe rubber.

Install shifter

Final step...mortal combat with the peg, fortunately Badweb corner men and my superior conditioning resulted in glorious success.

Killer indeed. They are downright scary. Do they tear up your boots?
