I like my bags. I had one latch break when my daughter kicked (hard)it while dismounting. I went to my dealer and ordered one and had it in four days. It cost me twenty bucks. The new latches may look the same as the old ones, but that's just external appearances. The factory says that the new latches are stronger, and I believe them. I can think of a few ways they could be strengthened without changing external appearances.
My dealer doesn't stock many parts because they don't sell many Buells. They almost always have what I need in less than a week, though.

I carry a spare latch with me on long trips. I have a bunggie for short trips.I also purchase Buell items everytime I go into my local dealership (Annapolis Harley-Davidson). Everytime I go in there I find a different counter person or salesperson and ask where the Buell accesories etc. department is. It has become a standing joke now with most of their folks. They say that in addition to a good number of their mechanics, I am the only one asking for Buell stuff. As a result howeve they are now ordering items for me to look at without and obligation to pay first. They have also got a small dispaly stand for Buell merchandise now, right up near the new 1125R. For those of you not famlier with Court he appears to have done singlehanded(as far as this board is concerned) more for Buell customer service/satisfaction than any other comapny rep. that I know off. He helped me out a great deal after a dealer that had never worked on a Buell did an abismal job of a TPS reset. Thanks again Court you excel at your hobby, it is greatly appreciated and I enjoy silently (usually),watching you help out others

go well with your new pirate outfit and shaaaps...

LMAO!! THAT'S FUNNY!!

Does anyone have the part number for the piece that breaks? I'm going to order a spare and want to make sure I get the right part.
I've been using my cases for two years now with no problems. I figure if I have a spare on hand they will last forever.....

I for one throughly enjoy the fact that Buell replacement parts do not cost "an arm and a leg". There are not many things in this world that you can buy for $20 that isn't made in an Asian country and inferior quality. The dealer I chose to purchase my Buell from is 525 miles from my primary home. I pass by the dealership on my trips to my second home 3 times a year. Like Ft_Bstrd I stop in each trip and buy whatever tee-shirt or Buell hat they currently have along with enough oil and filters to last me till my next trip. I do that in hopes that they will maintain a solid Buell presence. I've been fortunate that I have had no warranty issues. Bottom line is I don't think very much will go wrong with my Buell. If it does, I'll decide then whether it is worth a 500 mile trip or by the reasonably prices parts myself.

Kudos to Buell and company, and Court for being "different in every sense".

That is very cool . . next time you stop . . try this.

Find the owner (HD refers to him/her/it as "dealer principle") and say "Thank you for carrying the Buells".

I've known folks with lots of money, folks with large caliber handguns and folks with loud voices and nothing works quite like "THANK YOU".

Buell owners rock!

Pardon my ignorance, I have searched but haven't found an answer to this question. How do the latches break? I have an 08 Uly with the hard cases from buell. Is there something to look for or specific usages to avoid? Could someone post a picture of a broken latch so I can see what breaks?
Thanks.

The little plastic loops at the hinge point fatigue and break. Even with the utmost care, it's only a matter of time. Why they are made out of plastic is beyond me.

This is the first thread of broken latches. They all seem to have the same weak spot.

The key is to never force the bag closed, especially using the latch as the "closer". If the bag doesn't close easily, check to see what's in the way and try again. Only when the bag closes with ease, should you close the latch.

My understanding is that the new latches appear to be the same, but do have a "beefier" feel to them.

My right latch is broken, I've been meaning to get in to a dealership here (Portland) to see if they'll take care of getting me a new one (even though the bike is out of warranty) while I pick up some other parts I need. We'll see how it goes. I obviously understand it's not in warranty, but it's pretty clearly a common issue due to poor design/manufacturing.

I haven't had any problems yet with the bags (oops, the rt. side one leaked rather dramatically..3-4 inches of water during a good rain, but warrantee took care of that). But, I figured the latches were just a matter of time.
Thanks for the info.

Maybe I missed this from an earlier post.
What is the part number for the latch that breaks the most?
I couldn't find the cases listed in the 12X parts manual. Thanks.
