Looking to buy an '08 Ulysses. Previously owned a '99 X1 which I loved, but sold to buy an '06 SV1000S (which I'll be keeping and orienting more towards the track and day sport rides).

Questions: Special Ops pipe, do I need to modify/remap ECM? Or does the new computer do a good job of adjusting automatically? What if I also add a K&N air filter? If remap needed who can do this? Hardly Buell dealer or can a dynojet shop do it? Do I need a PC3 or anthing?

Right side air scoop: actually help cooling or just looks cool?

brake pads: stay with stockers or swap for what?

dino/synthetic oil: still wait until about 5k miles to switch? What's your favored oil good for few if any changes on long (4k+ miles) trips? (don't want to start oil war!)

Other tips & tricks? I'll be abusing this bike as my long range mount and commuter which means it's going to get lots of Oregon weather, roads and dirt.

I weigh about 260 w/o gear, am a fast B group/slow A group track rider, have lots of dirt experience too. Plan to get dirty with the Ulysses...In addition to new rubber and touratech skidplates and such, is there anything else which will better "enable" it offroad?

Also, what should I be asking the dealer to inspect prior to delivery? What should I pay close attention to (other than stressing about my wife's "comprimise" purchase...new beemer SUV. she really came out ahead on that deal!)

Break-in: by-the-book or ride it like I stole it?

Right side scoop. Brake pads. Dino/synth oil. Best way to break it in. The answer is Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No.Yes. No. Yes. No.
(I wish I had the little emoticon of someone opening a can of worms)

There is too little info about the 08s to know for sure if they will be fine without a reflash, but so far it looks like they are good. Al @ American Sport Bike can help with the ECM stuff.

For the scoop, see my last post ^ : )

A lot of people love the Lyndal pads; I have them, just need to put them on.

I had my Uly switched to HD synth 20-50 at the 1k service, its fine for me.

Tips? Don't leave it running on the kickstand while on a steep hill, get some weights for the front wheel to help keep it on the ground, and get a full face helmet to keep the bugs out of your permagrin : )

The Uly is fine right out the box off road, but it is a little bulky. The Touratech stuff isn't necessary but it looks nice.

I can't think of anything to inspect for delivery.

I broke mine in by the book; some people do it like they stole it, again:

Relax.
Ride it for a while. It takes 2000 miles before the damned thing even loosens up and runs at it's best. It will have new tires on it that need to be worn out before replacing. All your questions will answer themselves in time.

Although the Special O.P.S. would be first on my list!

Buellgler, I have an 07 No mods I use it on fire roads graveled country roads and for my daily commuter. I love it just like it is. I switched to H-D SYN3 at 4000 miles, it works good for me. Since you had a X-1 you know what Froggy means by permagrin! Get it, ride it, and keep your giggling to yourself.

I have an 08 and I tried to break it in by the book. Bullshit. Slow revs = vibe city.

Try to keep it above 3k rpm in any gear. The real power will come on above 4500.

Get the bags and some hvmp handlebar weights. This will help the vibration.

Go to Amsoil 20-50 on the first service.

Carefully set your suspension to the book.

Put nitrogen in your tires. Rear 40 - front 38. Stock pressure cups the tires.

Lubricate everything that moves, especially the elastomers and heim joints with Amsoil silicon lube. This helps the vibration, too.

I'm going on 1600 miles and she just keeps getting better.

It appears that nobody has perfected the 08 injection mapping yet, but there are some of us who are actively looking for the "enhancement". You can tell that it has really been set for the EPA. Weak roll on until it builds revs. Weak throttle until the revs are up. Strong as hell after that. This makes the bike "pipey" in my opinion. Just keep her on the pipe and the world is fine.

Once you get use to her, the fun really starts. The rocket bike boys question the corners. The advertisements aren't kidding when they say - own the corners. My Uly goes around mountain roads like a cat on velcro.

Enjoy!
