I have this persistent cough/hiccup accelerating off idle in 1st gear (500mi. on an '07 Uly); damn near killed me in traffic last week. It'll POP up through the intake.

Outside of this, it runs very well. Starts without any throttle - I always let it idle 'til the fan comes on before i ride off.

I thought maybe i should retard the static timing 2-3deg -- any thoughts?

When you start your Uly DON"T touch the throttle, let idle for at least 2 minutes before taking off. Then as you take off ease the throttle on, this will help. Mine did the same thing for the first 600 miles. Proper warming helps but will not eliminate the problem, I took my Uly in for the 1000 mile serv. at about 700 they reset the TPS I changed over to Redline syn. and threw in a K&N oil and air filter and have pretty much been cough free.

I can tell you this these bikes need to be warmed up properly and don't blip the throttle the bike doesn't like it and it will make you look foolish as well, i.e. Harley riders with straight pipes that are louder then they are fast. Be patient it will get better.

Try setting your idle up 200 RPM...

Though I don' think it is your problem, waiting for the fan to come on before you ride is not necessary. Does the fan ever shut off during your ride? The fan comes on at 428F. I would check TPS, AFV and static timing before making any timing changes. I might even check the intake connection where the air box enters the top of the throttle body. Normally if there is a leak there you will notice a major loss of power at top end rpm. Tps reset would be my first remedy.

Yeah, I don't touch the throttle at all from startup 'til warm up. When the fan comes on i know its warmed up, i guess that was my point.

any way, the cough doesn't bother me, really, i just don't want a minivan giving me a prostrate exam the next time i go to pull out in heavy traffic.

I dread the thought of taking this thing to the dealer - they all suck in my area.

I guess i need Al's VDST.

Can it ck. the AFV as well as do the TPS resets?

Thanks
John

I don't know if VDSTS does it, but i know ECMSpy will do it.

I had that issue and a TPS reset was the fix.

I have an 06 Uly, farkled to hell and back.

When I bought it new, it had this hiccup/sneeze that caused the motor to stumble, just for a second. Actually caused it to stall more than once.

Everyone told me it was the TPS reset, so I bought the VDSTS thingie and did a TPS reset and it helped. But the sneeze came back.

Next was the new magnacor wires with new plugs and it helped for a few weeks, then it came back.

Next was the open air and crank vent relocation, to get the oil fumes out of the intake. This also helped, but just like before it came back.

Then came the Race ECM and high flow exhaust without servo. This had no effect on the sneeze, but helped performance considerably.

Then came the engine tear down, with NRHS porting the heads and supplying a 1250 big bore kit, ceramic coated micron, and a special map from American Sport Bike. This helped for a long time, but just like before the stumble came back.

I was beginining to believe it was the nature of the beast, as the problem continued to return no matter what I did. Even allowing the motor to warm up completely did not prevent the occasional stumble.

In an act of desperation I tried the XOPTI Eprom mod last week. It has not stumbled yet, and I no longer have to wait for it to warm up to ride. I just start and go.

We will see how it goes.

Johnboy777,
Yes the VDSTS will do TPS resets and it will let you read the AFV (adaptive fuel value). The AFV will give you and idea about the way your engine is learning during closed loop operation. This learned value is then used to modify the open loop fueling. Open loop is where you are experiencing your problem. It is not worth bringing back to the dealer. VDSTS will help you find it. Static timing can be checked without software.

Treadmarks,
Will you and your Uly be at Daytona?

Davo,

I donno man. We are saving up for Italy later in the year. I wouldn't mind the ride up and back, but the missus would probably want to take the softail instead of he Uly.

I have an '08. It usually coughs once, maybe twice, in the first two blocks. If it was carbureted, I'd say that the accelerator pump shot was too late.

Starts fine, warms up for the time it takes to put on a helmet and gloves.

This was news to me but, since I was making an appointment to have my trashed wheel bearing fixed, the dealer told me that there was a recall for new fuel injectors. Mine's an '06 with a build of 12-05, I think.

The new injectors were for "poor cold starting and runnability." Something about 8 spray nozzles vs 3, I think.

Anyone else heard of this?

First time i ever heard of it. Perhaps he meant its a TSB and not a recall?

Maybe, I'm looking around for it. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I'd warn against "I just start and go" You'll be replacing base gaskets much sooner than normal.

I'd also like to ask, what is the "XOPTI Eprom mod" ?

John.... I have the VDSTS software and I plan on resetting my TPS here before March Badness.

You are MORE than welcome to come on over and use it once our weather breaks a bit!

Hi Steve,

It's not that I start and go all the time, It's that if I need to, I can, without the fear of stalling out and getting my arse flattened by some cager.

I normally always start and let it idle while I put on my gloves and helmet. About 1-2 minutes.

As far as answers to the "XOPTI Eprom mod", I will start a new thread,, titled as such.

Scooter - the nozzle TSB was for HD big twins.

The guy read it to me after doing a VIN search, also came up with the kickstand replacement. It was a dealer in Canada, I don't know if they have country specific TSBs or not.

I'll post something after I know anything new.

Just a quick update ... I talked with Al yesterday - he seems to think I have to re-set the TPS to correct my problem.

Well, I won't let either of the two local Harley dealers here touch the bike - that won't happen. When I was looking at Uly's, the sales manager said to me, "why do you want a Buell"? It took them 28 days to get four rubber fairing retaining pins, and when I talked to the service manager about serving my Uly, he said he wasn't too familiar with Buells, and his Buell guy was out sick until March - that was in late December. Hmmm.

So I did the unthinkable today (being the anti-geek that i am)- I ordered my EMCspys cable - next up, download the drivers and software for ECMspys.

I never realized when I purchased my Uly that I'd have to learn how to program my f**king ECM. ...I'm way too lazy for this sh*t.

Serenity Now! - Serenity Now!

BTW, speaking of the TPS... didn't somebody here have a problem with their TPS reports???

All I'm really after, all I really want is just to make sure a soccer-mom in her mini-van doesn't give me a prostate exam the next time i pull out into traffic... is that asking too much? No, i don't f**king think so.
