Does anyone have any experience using Thermotec's adhesive backed radiant heat barrier product?

I'm in the process of doing a bunch of mods to the Uly and while I had the engine rotated I thought I could line the inside portion of the frame/gas tank with this material and maybe reduce the radiant heat that the frame absorbs from the engine. Bought a 12" x 24" sheet product and a roll of 2" wide tape. Check out the web site at http://www.thermotec.com/product_detail.php?prd_id =13

Never heard of it.

It goes very well on the frame rail and does a great job of keeping the heat off.

I wish I would have done both sides tho, as the left is now warmer than the right.

My only question is,, is the frame designed to help sink some of the heat from the motor? If so wouldn't insulating it let more heat reside in the area of the motor where we are trying to move it from?

Interesting thought Bert......that has been a point of discussion with the Odie Blanket solution to the heat on an XB as well. I sometimes think trapping that much heat in the battery/ECM area may not be good.

No doubt the XB frame is a challenge for the needs of an air cooled V twin....IMHO the motor can take a bit more heat and it sure would be nice to alleviate some of the heat sink effect of the frame.

Tread, have you seen any adverse issues from your wrap?

Since the Fuel is in the frame, I think cooling it would always be a good idea.

I still have a few idea for opening up the area around the rear shock but just haven't the time to do it. Yet.

Could you measure the oil temp after a 1/2 hr ride?
Interesting to get a temp on the fuel pre and post ride as well.
I think I will try a ceramic coating on my header to reduce heat. There's a company nearby that does it. Coats the pipe inside and out, is supposed to significantly reduce
outer pipe temps and increase the scavenging of the exhaust gases.

I've been meaning to make a template to line the inner portion of the frame but I'm so busy with pipes, etc. I've been running my barrier under the seat of my 12Scg for over 3 years and have had zero issues with anything heat related. Tons of other customers have been also. No reported problems to note.....

No vapor lock issues here, and I find myself stuck in hell hot miami traffic everyday.

For what it's worth, my left nut is now hotter than my right.

I put that stuff on right fuel rail, the bottom of my stock and corbin seat, and had American Sport Bike coat the micron exhaust system in silver ceramic, and used a right side scoop.

The difference in left to right fuel rail temps after being stuck in traffic with the fan running is 15-20 degrees more on the left side.

Tread,

No problems with water getting trapped in the material? That'd be my only concern but with the heat it's probably unfounded.

(Nice, nice mods by the way. I can see that you're going to be a *bad* influence!)

Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The adhesive on the thermotech is very strong, and the inside of the fuel rail must be very clean. I used brake cleaner on a rag and wiped down the entire area be fore application. No water or separation issues yet. I even installed in on the bottom of my modified RSS to help keep incoming air cool.
