So it's been the coldest January in New Mexico since 1977 (the exact time I moved here from Cali). Well, today was supposed to be mid-50s, so gotta go riding.

Now I ride year-round, and pretty near every Sat-Sun go somewhere on the '06 Uly. To a total of 42,212 miles to date.

So this morning I load up the side cases and tank bag and head for one of my favorites: the Capitan Mountains of central NM. Beautiful (though austere) high plains and mountain country, with a nice 20-mile dirt loop through the Capitans. Total around 350 miles. Left Mrs. Greg and the last of the four boys to fend for themselves.

What a great day. Things just don't get any better. My spirit is renewed for another work week. This is why I ride.

On my return there is a stretch of "racer road" not long before my home. Nice twisties; very popular.

Well, the warm weather brings people out. And entering this stretch I check my mirrors and, what's this? A skinny-looking bike whose upright rider sports a "Honda" team jersey? Dirt helmet and goggles. Hmmm. OK, live and let live.

Except this guy is close. Too close. I almost always ride solo, cuz I have no control over others. Sigh. Normally I'd just wave him by, but something gets my dander up. I hereby christen him Supermoto D*ckhead (SMDH).

The curves on this stretch of road get tighter as you go. I'm cruising at my normal (GPS-measured) 70 mph, so I wick it up to 75. The first few turns are easy, and SMDH is still right there.

Coming up is about 3 miles of marked 35 mph twisties...I hold my 75 per and toss the Uly in (hey, I know this road and the Distanzias will hold, I promise).

Zing, zing, zing, zing, then I look back and hey, SMDH is about 100 yards back. Whaddya know, I guess I'm riding a SM as well, bags and all. I run up on a car and SMDH catches me, riding even closer and blipping the throttle on his loud thumper (throttle-blippers are one of my prime annoyances).

I've had enough; I wave SMDH by and by he goes, spooking the lady in the cage ahead of us such that she dives for the shoulder. Hey, SMDH, don't spook the cages! Hope he sees the white beard hanging down from my Shoei Hornet DS as he goes by...

I wick it up and catch him again, but now we're at the junction. I take the interstate back home, but his SM bike has to take the frontage road. Neener-neener!

Cross-country comfort. Moderate "dirtability"...enough to access the odd backcountry campground. Ability to drop Supermoto bikes in the twisties.

Man I love this bike!!!!! Thank you Erik and the elves.

Sounds like he needs some riding lessons.

The SM boys around Deal's are the real "deal" and very fun to watch.

I appreciate it when people wave me by. It's a little more fun when it's a sport bike. It's only happened a couple of times, but it's still fun.

Then you realize their license plate says Kansas. : |
