Regarding service costs, my HP2 now has just over 14,000 miles on it. The dealer did the first service which was approximately $200. I've done all subsequent service. It's the easiest bike to work on I've ever had. Uly vs. GS? Just buy the one you like the most and enjoy.

Each generation of ABS gets more treacherous

My '07 had the new generation of non-servo assisted ABS - best brakes of any bike I've owned. Totally non-intrusive and you could switch off the ABS for off-road riding. To be honest, I'd love to see those brakes on the Uly.

I had two BMW's with the servo-assist brakes and they never gave me a problem and they would haul you down with astounding power but they lacked feel. The brakes on the 2007 R1200S I owned with the non-servo assist and with the switchable ABS are FANTASTIC, on street and track!

"On positive for BMWs is if you like group activities, BMW ownership can be a lot of fun. Major clubs in every state, rallies in every state, national rally that rotates around the country with over 5,000 attendees each year, etc."

It's not the bike, it's the people. You are more than welcome to show up on your Buell, FJR or whatever you ride. I have been going to BMW rallies for a long time and they even enjoy looking at different makes. I had a triumph before the Uly.

I'll never buy a bike that can do this:

New style drive failure

I just rejoined BMWMOA and their mag is abuzz with problems of driveline failures. I carry a spare belt when I tour, less S.O.L. factor.

Given the niggling things going wrong with my Uly though I am looking for a GS, an Airhead or F800 though, if BMW ever gets it here.

New BMW Boxers are exactly the opposite of what I like about my Uly, a simple and very effective ride.

Nothing complicated here.

My point was if you drop the bike on the left side and break the clutch lever and bracket on the ULY it is 29.00 (I did)...drop the GS and break the same stuff, as the GS has a hydraulic clutch, the replacement for the lever/master cyl unit is $295...Have you seen the pictures of the mechanical nightmare it is to replace the clutch on a GS?.....get a price on that....you better be sitting down..see pics. on www.advrider.com under "beasts"...The dealer network on a trip is non-existent for BMWs...MY buddies have new GS bikes and it feels like I am driving my father-in-laws Crown Vic when I ride the BMSs..VS my G35.

I've been riding BMWs for over 20 years ( over 300k miles). I really wanted a 1200 GS. REALLY wanted one. Did a one hour demo ride and could not get comfortable with the bike. Ergonomics, vibes, etc. Still wanted one though. Borrowed one from a good friend. Rode the GS for a week, over 1000 miles. Adjusted the controls, the seat, the bars, everything. Nothing made it better, engine vibes were terribly annoying (even with the isolated bars). I was crushed.

A few months later I had the chance to borrow a Ulysses for a lunch-hour ride( local Buell dealers do not allow demo rides) wasn't really thinking of buying one at the time. Within 15 minutes I knew that the Uly was the right bike. Rode for another 45, "just to be sure". In this case, first impressions were correct. I could not get the GS to my liking. The Ulysses was great from the word go.

As a side note: I have quite a few friends who have purchased BMWs in the last few years. All have had at least one major component failure. My "newest" BMW was/is more than 15 years old.

Vibes? F'em. They even removed the balancers from the HP2's engine to lighten it. Isolated bars? Feh! It's a motorcycle ... let's rock! I'm riding my dirt bike to Daytona soon.

I'm about to make a decision on my 1200 GS vs. Uly question.
Are there any more opinions out there?
Here's the deal that's being offered.

-'06 Buell Ulysses vs. '08 1200 GS
-The cost of the '08, 1200 GS (with abs, on board computer...etc), will come to $22,000 ish Canadian after all taxes and fees.
-I would trade in my '06 Buell Ulysses with 17,000k on it (which I own outright), and they've offered me $6,500 for it.
-So..... $15,500 ish for an '08 1200 GS, which I will finance at 5.95%

Should I do the deal?
Should I keep my Uly?
What would you do and why?

What will the $22,000+interest GS do that the PAID FOR Ulysses will not?

It's a serious question.

I'm a huge fan of paying cash and OWNING. I've seen so many folks get sucked into buying motorcycles, cars and houses at userous rates and getting in way upside down.

If you bought the BMW for $22,000 and had to sell it in 90 days, what would your position be?

Again. . . I like both bikes. The GS (I only rode one for a couple hundred miles when BMWNA provided me a press bike at the time it was released) is an amazing, well built, durable and competent bike. It'll be much more expensive to service than the Buell.

It boils down to a personal choice about your money, how you want to spend it, how you ride and what you feel good about.

The caveat goes here. . . . as much as I enjoying talking "theory" of purchasing, I've NEVER bought a motorcycle (including the time I bought 3 1990 Sportsters the same day) that was not a purchase of passion.

I found the sales receipt for my 1990 Buell the other day and before I took delivery I have $9,000 worth of mods done to a $18,000 bike. I spent more than that on my 1996 S-1. The pleasure I derived was worth it.

At the same time. . . I drove (even with the ribbing I took from the folks at Buell, Road Thing and Henrik) my 10 year old pickup into the ground. A friend of mine bought a new Ferrari last week. . . he asked me how I liked it and my reply. . predictably to him . . . "less than my paid for pickup".

Think with your mind, then buy with your heart.
