Hi ya'll, maybe gonna make the leap to a Uly. Own an X1 now. Tips on what to look for in the used market and what years had problems please, thank you very much. |

If you're looking used, I'd go with an 07. There were a few good changes between years in the oil pump area to increase flow, lubrication, and cooling. They had also worked out much of the kinks with regard to the wiring harness. Some of the 06s had wiring harness issues with chafing. My 06 had part of the harness wrapped around the frame where the seat rubbed on it. It was an obvious goof. I'd look for deterioration or chafing on the plugs running into the ECM. Depending on the seat and weight of the rider, those connections have been known to rub on the bottom of the seat causing problems down the road. I would check the rear bearings with the wheel off if possible. Check for smooth operation. If they feel "notchy", expect to replace them. You might attempt to have the dealer replace them prior to sale if you are buying from a dealer. I'd check fan sounds. Any fan noises, and expect that you'll need a replacement at some time. I'd also throw a volt meter on the charging system to make sure that the stator and voltage regulator are healthy. I think that's about it. Sounds like alot, but none of these issues is really big. |

What Ft_Bstrd said. There have been a few used '08s around - not what someone expected, I guess. Again, for some people, enough changes between the years to justify the higher price. No TPS resets, increased steering arc, 3rd color choice (BLUE)if black or orange don't do it for you, etc. |

The 08 has and even more improved oiler system, better fuel delivery/ECM tuning, and smaller stator. The stator in the 06/07s has too high a peak output I believe. Mine failed at around 14,000 miles. No reason it should have. The 08s have a better timing system to address pinging issues. I believe it simply allows a more precise calibration of timing than the 06/07 system. If I were buying new, it'd be an 08. If you are buying used, I'd go for an 07 (or used 08 if you are lucky). |

The Uly is a great bike for a big guy like you. It pretty much can do anything the X1 can plus a few things it can't. I have been very happy with mine. If you are looking for used the '07 have progressive spring rates in the front tubes versus the single rate '06. The '07 is less prone to dive under braking but still does. The '07 also has a lower seat with a more comfortable pillion area. The lower seat may be a disadvantage for you though. You may be more comfortable on the taller '06 seat. To me the '08 is the best so far. It has all the '07 upgrades plus better electronics that do not need TPS reset. They have higher capacity oil pump and larger (more flutes) oil cooler for better cooling. The oil pump change encompassed other changes in the motor that allows for 300rpm higher red line. They come standard with heat shields under the seat that can be added to the earlier models to help with heat management in the summer. They have an offset triple tree that allows for a much tighter turning radius. They have larger 47mm versus 43mm front fork tubes for great stability. The come standard with heated grips. To sum it up, the '08 to me is worth the money if new is in you budget. Happy hunting and hopefully we will ride our Ulys together in West Virginia together. |

Thank you all for answering. Been doing homework to make the right choice and low and behold Jim Nance sent me a PM. Aweful nice to be able to hear from people who know instead of go in somewhat blind. I LOVE THIS PLACE! Carlos, I hope to make it a reality. We would of course have to bike the firewood in cause I would ride down. May I ask if anyone has problems with the front dive as Carlos has said. Aftermarket springs are made for this arent they? In the classifieds I have listed a Uly for a friend. I wont bore everyone with the particulars but can be had at an attractive price. Take a minute and go there and then get back to me with what ya'll would pay for it, if it were you to buy. Its an 07 with extended warranty and the rear bearing and swingarm were replaced under warranty. |

Wile - Your friend isn't going to like this, but that price is way to high. The dealer down the street has new 07s going for 8995. That's with out bags, but I can't see your friend getting a thousand dollars more for a used one, even with bags. As to dive, the 07 comes with progressive springs to alleviate this. I believe the springs cost $150 if you want to upgrade an 06. |

Damn, I paid 9,995 for my '07 @ Thanksgiving and thought I got a good deal....Wow! No matter how good a deal you get on a bike, somebody will always come up to you and tell you where you could have gotten it a lot cheaper. If the bike makes you happy, then you got a good deal. If you don't like the bike, no matter how little you paid for it, you got screwed. |

The springs are $50 and well worth the upgrade. |

Hey Wile_ecoyote, What ever year you get is fine, just make sure you get the faster black color. John EDIT: BTW, I'm just 45 min. north of you; I like to ride the Calcutta, Fredericktown, Columbiana County area a lot. PM me, i'll meet you down there once the weather breaks. The 08's have a couple additional features I love, and would be willing to pay for! I would try my hardest to find one used, otherwise, I'd try to find a dealer who wants to deal on a new one. Factory heated grips, NO MORE TPS RESETS! Bigger better oil cooler, more turning radius, bigger better forks, heat shielding, and BLUE! That being said, if I could get a great deal on an older one, it would be hard to turn down. (Message edited by Mikef5000 on January 22, 2008) |

I just went through this process Wile_C - had the funds for a new 08 and all of its advantages, or a used one. I went with a 2006 with a couple of thousand miles on it and many of the options I would have ended up buying. I then put the 08 triple clamps on it to get the main thing I felt was needed on the 06 I bought but did not have. In the end I ended up with a bike I am quite pleased with for a few thousand less than the 08. |
