Bike has done just 12000 kms (about 7500 miles) and yesterday starting up for the first time the tacho sweeps but the speedo doesn't. Ride up the road and within 100 metres the speedo is working fine. At the end of the day start up to return home and the gauges do a normal sweep, speedo working fine.

Then this morning no sweep on the speedo but the speedo is working within a few metres. Leave office this afternoon, once again the speedo doesn't sweep but does start working within 100 metres.

I've pulled the speed sensor and cleaned it, checked connector and couldn't see any frayed wires. Battery connections are tight. Checked fuses all fine. I've done a search and it seems others have experienced similar behaviour but its not clear whether they fixed it or not.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Mine sort of does the same thing. Sometimes it doesn't sweep when I turn the key on. Sometimes it just twitches like a gear or something isn't fully catching.
The Speedo always works though when the bike is moving.
Haven't done any troubleshooting, not really a problem yet.

My tach has occasionally done that since day one. It seems to be getting better with age, at 20k miles it happens less and less.

I'd put another 30 to 40 thousand miles on the bike, and recheck it : )

The needle sweep at "IG On", I suspect, is the gage assembly self test (or POST in pc terms.) The needle not sweeping means the stepper motor that moves the needle is not functioning. A faulty solder joint on the gage assembly PCB would be my guess. Just hope it fails completely before the end of warranty. At the very least get the bike to the dealer for documentation of the problem.

I've been having the exact same problem. I think it might be a battery issue, because if left on the battery tender it will sweep fine. But if the bike is off the tender, and isn't ridden for a few days, the needle won't sweep. Yeah I know that doesn't really help, or diagnose the problem, but it doesn't do it with a full charge. Voodoo?

Probably not much help, but worth a thought is that my needles always swept no matter what, but my speedometer stopped reading when my VR/stator went bad.

I'm wondering whether it may be the battery as it has definitely had moments where it seemed to struggle to turn over the engine at that first start up and with our summer weather the fan is often running for a while at shutdown.
I just can't get my head around that the speedo doesn't sweep but the tacho still does.

Don't think it's a battery issue with mine. The bike kicks over fast and starts right up. Seems like something mechanical in what ever drives the needle to move.
I tend to agree with Scottykrein... Voodoo is the most likely explanation.
My neighbor is a shaman, I'll have him check it out this weekend.

Mine did it from new as well. I rode it for about 9 months with no issues than the sketchy sweep on "key-on". I had the speedo unit replaced under warranty and that cured it. It takes a bit longer to get from the factory because your dealer has to tell them the mileage to program in. My dealer was cool and let me estimate how many miles I'd have on the bike in "three weeks", so I could keep riding.

I have the same problem. Mine bounces around and then settles in and starts reading correctly but some times reads about 40 when I'm doing 70 and sometimes doesn't read at all.My bike is turning over slowly when I start it but always starts.

I had electrical problems caused by a broken wire in the console. My symptoms were headlights and turn signal indicators going out at full right lock. Seems like your problems might be caused by something similar. When your speedo isn't working, try pulling on the wiring bundle that enters the left side.

On an odd note, the dealership said the wires had been broken and soldered before. No one else has worked on it, though, so it must have been done at the factory.
