Thought that some of you may be interested in this exhaust can mod that is done by "tubbs" in the UK. I'm guessing that it is similar to what Drummer or Special Ops do.
Just a note that UK machines are around 94bhp from the factory unlike the 100-odd bhp that the states get. It's mainly down to emissions and haivng a catalytic convertor in the can.

From UK BEG - the bike is a 2008 Uly:

--------------------------------------
I picked up my tubbs modified exhaust last week, and I’ve now put some decent miles on it. Work done was the tubbs exhaust mod, K&N filter, re-route oil breather hoses out of the air box, and “race” spark plugs.

In a word; FANTASTIC.

I have the dyno chart from tubbs, which even though we didn’t get chance to get a “before” chart, shows a significant hike in the power of the bike from factory.

Some seat of the pants observations – my first test ride with the modified exhaust resulted in a huge grin and an amazing “wow” factor. The bike used to float the front wheel with any decent fist full of revs. This now continues into second gear – with the wheel lofting on demand. It’s a big difference to the noticeable power.

Impressively there are no flat spots in the useable range, with a linear power curve. I’ll try to get it scanned so I can post it here. Peak bhp is 91 (at the back wheel of course) which roughly indicates between 100bhp and 105bhp at the crank. Considering the factory bikes in the UK have 94 bhp at the crank, this is a huge increase.

From new I noticed a very distinct 'rev shelf' at 5,000. It would rev freely up to 5k, and you’d feel like you had to PUSH through to 5.5k – was really noticeable. A manual TPS reset (throttle on off three times with 1 second delays) would make it slightly better, but not remove it. It’s now completely gone.

The other changes are more subjective. The bike definitely vibrates less (can tell from the mirrors), although tubbs also switched out the spark plugs which could be a factor here. The bike is a lot lighter – with a lot of metal being taken from the (heavy) stock exhaust. One of the weird things I’ve noticed, and not sure if I’m right here – but the bike seems to return to idle quicker. Unfortunately I have years of a “throttle blipping” habit behind me – and I was struggling with the Uly as it definitely did not like fast throttle blips – usually bogging down and nearly stalling or misfiring. It’s now no longer noticeable at all, and I can only think that it’s because it is dropping revs quicker than before.

The sound is AMAZING. Truly a mental noise; but luckily for me in London - not too loud at idle so as to annoy the neighbours. Rev the bike above 2,000 RPM and it’s like some WWII fighter plane or something, with a lovely throaty cackle on the down-throttle. Tubbs reckons that once the bike has a few more miles there will be more power (currently only 900 odd miles on it), and there will be more room for tweaking the performance and sound. Should be able to get it up to 95-100bhp....

A brilliant modification. I was lucky enough today to run into another Uly in London which had a micron (I think) aftermarket can (an orange Uly – anyone own up?) – and in comparing the noise at the lights the tubbs has a definite deeper, definitely more aggressive sound. I’d get this mod done again just for the sound – let alone the great performance increase.
I’ve never had an aftermarket exhaust (along with K&N filter) that has had such a big impact on grunt. I’m not on commission, just thrilled to bits!...

Cheers tubbs – I’ll be back in soon for those 3,000 mile tweaks!

Hi bigkuri, do you have any pics? Does he do exchange cans or does he simply sell a modded can? I don't really want to modify my standard can.

Hiya,
No pictures as simply they won't show anything - the can looks exactly the same as original, with a slightly different exit pipe, and a nice rust-free hot coat.

The work is done on an exchange programme, which takes around a week plus postage time (so 7 working days?). Or you can drop in the whole bike (which I did).

If you don't want to mod your own can, then best bet is ebay for a used one - they do come up occasionally.

For pricing go to UKBEG and drop tubbs a PM. It's very good value.

Cheers!

Any contact details for TUBBS?
Can't PM on UKBEG as my access here won't let me.
Cheers
Iain

A pleasure. I've had enough bad mechanics/cowboys in the past to really appreciate a good one!

And tubbs knows Buell's inside & out, and does fantastic work at fantastic rates.
