hi - upon removing the airbox cover, i find the top of my airbox has slots cut into it like in this pic:
http://www.rhinowerx.com/fotos/details.php?image_i d=2838
actually mine doesn't have the slots cut into the top - but does have the slots cut into the side.
i take it this is not how it left the factory?
it also has a K+N filter.
the bike has a kind of pinking at high revs - i'm thinking that the previous owner may have done the race kit installation and returned it to stock for sale.
the ECU looks standard.
those slots are mods - right?
i'm planning to get it dyno tuned after i find a race kit or better muffler, but am worried it may be lean with the opened airbox and standard ECU.
any comments?

If the airbox has some of the slots, it's been modified to be similar to the '07 airbox.
Many people were drilling and slotting the '06 airbox when the '07 airbox changes were seen; or replacing it with an '07 piece completely.

Whether or not it may be too lean, I doubt it, but would wait for someone more knowledgeable than I before accepting that.

I have an '06 that I drilled seven 1 1/4" holes in it. It is a free minor mod that allows more air when it is needed. The bikes computer system adjusts for the air flow in a few rides. It didn't help mileage. It did make wheelies a little easier and it makes a stonkin' good intake noise when honkin' on it.

Some guys got the '07 remap done on their '06 bikes because the "open" airbox was a factory improvement and they wanted to have it match up. Mine had no ill effects at all and has run fine with the mod for over 20,000 miles since it was done.

Get it Dynoed before you do any mods. Then you will know for sure what if any improvements you have made. Most people just say it's faster because it makes more noise.

I cut my 06 box but then just ordered the 07 box as they are inexpensive... If you do some nasty cut job a dealer might say you did unlawful modifications and then the sh--t hits the fan due to EPA requirements...no other changes needed,(FI adjustments) bike runs better, maybe just a tad less gas mileage.....the computer seems to adjust for the additional air by adding the extra fuel. My observations on one with 35k miles.
