Did I just make up a word? Anyway, who has experience with the HB bags in a getoff? I am torn between buying the Caribous(function) and HBs(them's purdy). I'm pretty sure the Caribous will hold up well in a fall, I was concerned about the stockers...also have doubts about the HB's 'latch issue'. thx for the input.

Way back in August 2005 I was following a guy on a Uly with the HB bags. He blew a tight corner (25 mph) and low-sided. The HB bags came through beautifully---they stayed on, stayed closed, and were only scuffed. The terrain he slid on was dirt/rocks (highway 191 in AZ if you know that one).

I was quite impressed with the way the HB bags stood up to the abuse.

Mine has had the sitting still right and left bag test. Minor scuffs no problems. They protected the bike completely.

I had one latch failure a year and a half(20,000 miles) ago, no problems since. Just don't over stuff the bags and lever it shut with the latch. Push it closed with a knee, then latch your over stuffed bag.

Back in Oct. I T-boned a deer doing approx. 60 mph. The back of the bike went up and slammed down on the left side and slid about 30 yards. The brackets were a little bent, but the bags were just worn down. They still opened just like new and I loaded them up with broken bits. I would say they hold up great in a get off. My Uly was one of the first 100 built so I had some of the first HB/Uly bags(took about 7 weeks to get) and I never had a latch problem.

I went down last June. Hit a section of loose gravel/sand.

Broke my collar bone and the windshield.
H-B bags and HVMP bar ends have some minor scuff marks.
I've also have not had a problem with the latches on my '06 with 30M+ miles.

low-sided at 65 mph - some pretty good scuffs on one corner of the side bags but it has pretty much sanded out.

i also lost the tail bag once after forgetting to lock it on the hardware. i had just left the driveway and was probably going 20-25 mph. even over the Drummer I could hear "something". I stopped, looked over my shoulder and watched the HP tumble and bounce until it almost caught up to me. cracked the reflective lens and a couple scuffs - thats it

Dumped left and right while trail riding. The caribous will hold up to it, and not collapse under the falls that I have had. +1 for them, plus it makes the BMW guys scratch their head wonder what kind of bike that is ...

On the other hand, I had lots of broken latches. After the first one I was very careful not to lever the bags shut with the latch. Heck , one broke with the bags empty and the bike sitting in the sun. This finally stopped when I pulled the weatherstripping (and they didn't leak without it) I noticed on my new bags (insurance replacement) the weatherstripping is much more streamlined and the bags close easier

The bike went off the Dragon in March. Running about 35mph it flew off the road, hit a tree with the muffler flipped and landed on that bag.





Because of the bags, guards and muffler (what hit the tree), the frame and engine were not even scratched. Here is the bike later that day.





I've put almost 7000 miles on the since that day. The muffler has a dent, but the valve still works.

In case you didn't see it, Carlos' Uly is the orange dot in the middle of the picture and it got there off the roadway to the extreme upper right as he was headed towards where the picture was taken. A truly tough MBIV incident!

His backup bike came off the trailer, got wrapped in a protective cover and made the weekend!

I also went down in the spring. The bags were scratched but still worked and were watertight. The thing I found most remarkable was, I rode it to a stop and my pants were not even scuffed. The bags kept the spacing between the road and my legs. I will never ride the Uly again without the side bags for that very reason. I suggest others do the same. They are a tough bag and provide awsum leg protection in a fall.

Maybe I should get some hard bags for my Uly! I crashed it today and it's an insurance job! I've only done 205 miles on it, hit a path of icy leaves in the road on a right hand bend and the front washed out, gripped and the bike sort of flipped and spun and landed on the right hand side passenger grab handle and twisted the rear sub frame. Fortunately, my right leg and foot took the rest of the impact and saved the bike from further damage!!! The right hand footrest was wiped off, there is a ding in the front rim that deflated the tyre and here's a funny one, the right side hand guard pivoted around, pressed against the banjo union on the master cylinder and I lost the fluid!!!

The insurers are picking it up on Monday morning

I will attest to the Carribous crashability for off road use. I have dumped left and right and had no damage to the bike or bags. Dont know about the Buell bags, cuz they dont build a set for the CityX. Plus the looks are very Mad Max -Robo
