I received a passle o' parts form Al at American Sportbike today, including a ceramic header. I thought I would spend a few minutes this evening replacing the stock header so I could quickly send it back for the core deposit. I don't think I have spent more than 30 minutes in the past replacing headers, hell the Ural only takes about 5 per side! Imagine my surprise when I started diggin into the Uly and flipping from section to section following instructions...and the outright shock when I got to the rotate engine part....!

Looks like I am getting an "opportunity" to learn more than I initially thought! It's all good though...I got a Uly!

here's what it will look like mid stream. It's not all that bad. I started it one afternoon and finished it the next morning.
It's helps to have proper stands or a hoist.
I think I saw someone use an engine hoist once to lift the bike from the middle!

I think I could have down a little faster than I did, but once I had the engine down, i naturally had to inspect everything that I had access to.
Like I think I should just go ahead and change the plugs since they were right there and inspect the wiring harness.
Sorry this picture is so big but I'm on the road and it's the only one I have available.

Wow Bearly, I just noticed the bent forks and broken wheel. Yikes!

What happened?

Thanks Bearly - this exercise also explains the fuss over changing plugs so I see the wisdom in checking them as well. Fortunately we have several months of winter left so I just need to block out a little extra time - which means the SRX rebuild gets pushed back a little more.

What FB...whahappened to the bike in the background?

SRX Rebuild? Is that the Caddy? Those are nice.
Oh, pay no attention to that other bike, "IT's Only a Flesh Wound". That's sort of old news (July 07) now as it is running again, but the wife (aka house monster) hit a brick porch on a house between 40 and 50 mph. It never fell over. I put two new rims(2), brake(1), forks, new muffler and the left mirror on the bike and it great. I add the frame slider and the heated grips since then. So it's look in nice shape now. At least it was till I found the frame has a crack in it last week and it's leaking fuel since I filled it up for the winter.

Nipsey, you can change the plugs without rotating the engine of course, but it's just easy when they are staring you in the face and I always keep a spare set on the bike.
As I say I'm on the road and I can't verify this but I think the manual doesn't mention to remove the left rider foot peg bracket assembly as you see on the photo. I found that it was chaffing on the primary case when I let the motor down on the jack in the foreground. It's a pain if you have the bags mounts as you have to loosen those as well. Another thing I found was that the front isolator bolt had a lot of corrosion on it and I had to spend some time cleaning that up. You might be able to see some of that as the bolt and the isolator are inside the front muffler clamp on the floor in the foreground. I coated it with anti seize before I put it back in.
I found that the Idler adjustment cable rubs on the coil mount bracket pretty hard, the out platic/rubber coating was gone and it was starting to corrode. I wish I had changed that as it is getting hard to move now. I had 11,000 miles when this picture was taken. I was putting on the Micron Exhaust from American Sport Bike along with a custom Map for race ecm that Al uploaded for me. Nice people.

Al in all the manual has the sequence down pretty well. The second event always takes half the time and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Flesh wound Ha!40-50 mph and a porch....<insert head scratch>, impressive that it stayed up !

1986 Yamaha SRX600 thumper...basically half a Buell - single cylinder 600 cc bike that when done should weigh just over 300 lbs. and produce a mind staggering 45 hp.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but I remember reading a while back that it was possible to remove the header without rotating the motor by pulling the cooling fan and accessing the rear header nuts through the fan opening. I'm not sure if anything on the XB12X/SS/TT frame prevents doing it that way or if the method even worked in the first place, but it's probably worth a shot. Eventually I'll be sending my header to HP coatings, when I do I'll attempt to use the fan method first and let you know how it goes.

Wow Spike that would be great if that were possible. I don't know as I was just following the manual. Just from memory, I'll be the aft portion of the head pipe is awfully close to the frame when the pipe is slide out to the end of of the studs. Ya keep us informed.
Nipsey, Ya that a little line from a Monty Python movie, "it's only a flesh wound". The wife got rocked back by the torque and applied full throttle half way around her second corner on the bike in first gear. I put this Ss on the stands and found that red line is 50mph. First there was the curb that took out the wheels and then 50ft of grass with the rear wheel still driving. The "Lovely Bride" (aka the House Monster), had the railing on the porch slow her airspeed down a little before she body slammed the house over the windows on the front porch. She led the assault on the railing with her face shield and that popped her head back and it fractured her trachea in two places which earned her a helicopter ride. What really hurt I'll bet was breaking off the left foot peg with her bare ankle. (small tennis shoes against my advise) I bought the blast for her the next day.
Ah Yes the Thumper, I have the KLXr 650. Which is a piped and jetted 57hp, 270 pound green monster. It's in the basement with a blown head gasket. Ever since I bought the Uly I've lost interest.
