Hi Guys, following on from my original request for advice, I've managed to get myself a copy of Mapsource USA and can now properly plan out this trip. Here's my original thread if you need to refresh your memory, but basically I'm looking to take a group of Brits on a tour around the PCH, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon.

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/321077.html

The attached route starts and finishes at Vegas (EagleRiders rental shop - offering great rates I have to say)and goes west before hitting the coast road and then north. If you don't have mapsource I'll upload a pic in a few minutes, but for now, I'd appreciate all your comments and criticisms of this route - remember though that I have no idea of what the roads are like other than by looking at how squiggly they look on the map!

Can you also tell me if March would be a good month to do this trip? The bike rental is significantly cheaper than in April, so hopefully you'll say yes!

As ever, a big thanks in advance guys, and I hope you all had a good Christmas and have a Happy & Prosperous New Year.

Thanks
Clive

Edit - Hmm, seems I can't upload the mapsource file as it's too big. Anyway, I've uploaded it onto our tours site, so if you have the time please click the link below and you can open the file from the attachment in my post there. Thanks again.

Clive,

Looks like a nice ride, I envy you guys that one. I lived in the western U.S. for many years and have traveled most of those roads. It will be a great ride.

The weather in March would be early spring in the west and with typical weather should not be too extreme for the average Briton. The route hits areas that can get both very hot and very cold and will also have a pretty good variation between day and night. And, of course, extremes or freak weather can occur too. Riders should probably be prepared for riding in temperatures that range from the 40 to 80 Fahrenheit (4 to 27 Celsius) range.

I've saved your "MapSource file" and put a copy of it here:

http://home.maine.rr.com/jerbes/misc/Wild%20Wild%2 0West.gpx

If anyone wants to, they can choose to "Save link as..." and save a copy of the file. I'll leave the file there for the long run so you can email that link to people and it will be good for a long time.

The file will open to viewing if double clicked but what will be seen is xml (a dialect or flavor or ASCII text) and not make much sense or provide much info from viewing or reading.

And, as you say, if they have MapSource and North American mapping, they can open the "wild wild west.gpx" file and look at the route.

Jack

I love your ride!! Any room for a Yank to tag along as an "American" interpreter?

I”ll make a suggestion to the north portion of your ride. It adds an extra 40 miles but it takes you on HWY 299 instead of HWY 36. The town of Willow Creek is the “hometown of Bigfoot” is mid way across CA and the road is a bit twisty also. With Mapsource you can make a Google Earth http://earth.google.com/ file that you can “play” it in Google earth you can do a virtual drive of the route. Open your route and under VEIW menu the last tab is view in goggle earth. This is what I use before every ride to get the “lay of the land” before I try a road the GPS tries to send me down.
