I see Buell has their race ECM listed as available for the Lightening and the Firebolt, but not for the Uly. Can anyone tell my why?

I can't but I can guess. The race ECM gives you a bit more HP in the higher rpm range but will actually suffer less torque and power down low. Uly's need torque and power down low.

I have one on my Uly and it seems to grunt plenty - but then maybe that is just me...

I have one on my O6. Makes all the difference in the world. Less ping, more zing!

Is there a Dyno available for the Uly with the race ECM. Of course you have to trash the muffle too. The race ECM won't work the exhaust valve.

Trash the muffler?

Why not just disconnect the interactive exhaust cable and wire open the exhaust valve? There aren't any sensors that tell the ECM whether or not the exhaust valve has 'actually' opened or closed (only whether or not the interactive exhaust actuator is operating). I would imagine, as long as you don't disconnect (its electrical connection) or mess w/ with the actuator, no problem ... it thinks everything is fine.

My thought was to 'try out' a race ECM w/ the exhaust cable disconnected and the muffler valve wired open, before investing in a muffler.

I'm all ears. It's been my experience that any race or off road use chips or boxes that are done right do a good job in fattening up the the injectors plus adjusting the timing. BUT - the real power gains are in the pipes [ asides from cams-pistons etc.] Modern closed loop systems with oxygen sensors keep things in perspective for the program. However, a dyno would show you the real numbers - an exhaust gas analyzer would make the numbers sharp. From what I've been reading, Drummer Pipes are on top of these numbers.

It's definitely louder than 102 HP!

Seriously, eliminating the low RPM surge and the reduced ping make it like FB said "the best mod not available."

As you can see here, you got the numbers a bit wrong... the "acceptance run" is the one you want.

The Buell Race exhaust with the race ecm and K&N filter got the best power of all the pipes tested, with 103.27hp at the wheel.

The best I got was with the race ecm/direct link tune on a dyno coming in at 81rwhp at denvers altitude.

Pwnzor,

Close but not quite... You forgot the Micron, which edges out the race pipe by ~1hp at the very top of the RPM range. It's at the very bottom of that page, and the start of the next.

As it goes I was told (By a fairly reliable source) The ECM on current 08 Uly is far better than the Race ECM (read outdated) So there is no real advantage at this time to add a different chip,ECM,or whatever to improve the current stock module.
Not to say that you would not feel any performance enhancement buy adding a new and better pipe (Drummer,Special Ops D&D etc. etc.)or buy increasing airflow with a free flowing efficient air filter. I am sure you would.
I don't know this for fact just what I have been told anyone know any thing different please speak up, as I would be the first to increase performance if a simple new ECM is made avail.

Wow, so a stock Uly has 101 rear wheel hp. I just assumed that the 103 hp on the Buell website was measured at the crank. Does anyone know what the hp is at the crank in the 1203cc engine? Just curious as I have a new 08 Uly in my garage and want to know as much as I can about it.

You can install the race ECM and wire the stock exhaust open. I did that and by seat of the pants, noticed an increase in power, particularly at the top end. It did help out with the low end choppiness too.

My setup at that time was a 2006 Uly with the race ECM, stock exhaust wired open, K&N air filter and 3 1/2 inch holes drilled in the left hand side of the stock airbox.

I only ran it that way for about 3,000 miles before returning it to stock. I returned it to stock in order to troubleshoot an unrelated problem - just making sure that those mods hadn't created the problem somehow.

The main thing running that setup did for me was to make me want to put a pipe on the bike! I think it would greatly benefit from the addition of a pipe.

It seems like we keep going 'round-and-'round with this.

Back to the original question, the answer is because the '08 Uly uses a different FI system now and there is no Race ECM for it. The older Race ECM listed for the other bikes works on the '06-'07 Uly's.

Actually the original question was why is the Buell race ecm only listed for the Lightning and Firebolt and not the Ulysses?

In my oppinion it's more dependent on the model year. The race ECMs are based on ECM types CB060 (XB9, 2003) and GB231 (XB9/XB12, 2004). The Uly is equipped with an ECM type IB310 (like all other Buells MY 2005 (?) and up) and there's no race kit with an IB310 ECM type included.

So the Firebolt and Ligthning mentions are a bit misleading, from my point of view. It might better say "for models up to MY 2004" - and these were only Firebolts and Lightnings.

Regards,
Gunter

Did I not answer it? Let me reword it this way. The Race ECM was listed for the Uly until model year 2008 when the FI system changed and they don't make on for it now.

Isn't this the guy talking trash over on ADV Rider about how owning an "evil Uly" was "worse than prison sex"?

And he's still posting here?

Unbelievable!

I think that the race ECM not being listed for the Uly is just an oversight. Since the Uly didn't come out until MY 2006, it just didn't get put on the application list for the race ECM. Since it is the same basic platform as the Lightening and the Firebolt, the race ECM does work with it.

I think I understand now. I was just looking at Buell's current web site which only list accessories for the current model year.

As an early 06 owner I can say without a doubt that the race kit (muffler, ECM and air cleaner) made a huge difference in the "rideability" of my bike. The bucking and pinging stopped and my mileage went up. The peak HP may not have improved much, but the mid-range and throttle response improved greatly.
