A while back, I posted a thread - shakin like a dog shittin razor blades. I was beginning to think I had bought the wrong bike as it was just too buzzy with a complete inability to ride at anything under 3300 rpm. Even at that, the buzz was unacceptable. I have been riding big v - twins, Harleys Victorys and now the Buell since the late 70's. I have been buzzed badly and I've learned many tricks to smooth out this nasty curse of the v-twin.

Here's what I did.

Took her to the dealer to replace a fouled plug - it was running BUT never ever trust a Hogwallop or a fouled plug

Reset the TPS - I've done a million Victory TPS resets but the 08 Buell requires a propritary hand held analyzer

NOTE - These 2 things helped a lot - but there was still more buzz than I could be happy with.

Then I installed the HVMP weighted grips - Wonderful improvement especially with the Hi Freq buzz. This product is well worth the money and should be considered by any ULY driver or anyone spending a long time on their bike

Nonetheless - there was still some buzz making it through the seat and pegs - still some through the bars.

The I finally got the hepco - becker bags that I had ordered. As I was installing them, it occurred to me that the mounting hardware [ which in typical H-D fashion had to be modified to fit ] was going to provide extra bracing between the fender/seat assembly and footpegs.

Then I also did a sin - I lubed the heim joints and front elastomer - with tire shine.

Whammo - buzz be gone! A short 25 mile run in COMFORT! For once I was finally satisfied with this bike. SLow back roads or fast 4 lane - SWEET!

Roughly 600 miles and a few old tricks and now this ULY rocks. Much smoother- much happier.

There are a few more ticks I'll be trying.

Amsoil - I'm a dealer - I got into it slowly after having proven it to myself. Every machine I've switched to Amsoil is a happier machine -PERIOD!

Irridium or Platinum Plugs and some performance wires - anybody know of proven good Spark plug wires for the Buells?

Race ECM - All these big air cooled v-twins have to meet some very strict air requirements, but its not natural to starve an engine. They have done a wonderful job of getting some serious ASS out of an old sportster engine and meet emissions. But I know there is some more ASS in there.

I want to thank all of you who have responded with your experience and advice.

Hi Don, Glad you got some of the vibes under control. Good to see a charlestonion here for a change. Spent 30 years there in Summerville and it is a very nice place to live.

Magnecor has the plug wires your looking for, and this will help with vibes in the console.

thanks for the tip. I'll also go for a drummer{maybe - not too much noise] and a K/N filter

Just south of Summerville. 682 miles south to be exact! Stuck in the republic of Miami.

Also,

Under the air box base there is a engine to frame rod end connected to the frame. The bolt on the left side is too tall and rubs the bottom of the air box. I ground off just a small amount of the top of the bolt to prevent it from tapping the bottom of the air box.

MIAMI! I wanna be a snowbird - its snaining here. Don't want to live there - just long visits. Hard to find curvy mountainous outback roads there.

I'll check that mount for interference. Thanks Again

Conchop,

Glad you got your vibes cured. I'd be interested to know more about the TPS reset, since the bike is supposed to automatically reset its own TPS. I'd guess what they did was re-zeroed some reference point that the self-setting TPS feature refers itself to. Several 08 Uly owners have complained of quirky low speed behavior that sounds like a maladjusted TPS, so maybe most dealers haven't heard about this yet.

Regarding Charleston/Summerville- this is weird. You guys are saying there's a Summerville, WV near Charleston, WV? Oddly enough, I live in Summerville, SC which is ~20 miles from Charleston, SC.

I wuz talking about Summerville, SC.
Lived there the last 30 years.
Funny how traffic there is almost as bad as it is here!

OK, well Don is evidently in Charleston, WV, not Charleston, SC. Nice to meet another (former) Summervillian. Yes, our traffic has gotten ridiculous lately.

Good traffic - I live just outside of Charleston WV and there is a Summersville closeby - 50 miles or so that has one of the most amazing man made lakes in the world. The water is jet blue and the limestone cliffs use to be great to dive off of. Illegal now - too high and too many people getting hurt [ me too ]. Nonetheless the water has a therapeutic effect that is quite refreshing and invigorating. When I mention the riding in the Summersville area, I'm not shittin when I say its a well kept secret. Rt. 60 through Hawks Nest, the New River Gorge Bridge, 150 scenic Highway, The Potomac Highlands. This is one big reason I bought the Ulysses. One back road after the next - low traffic - scenery - challenging water crossings - excellent camping or lodging. It is a very well kept secret.

I was stationed in Charleston SC and we partied our asses off in Summersville SC. There is a bar called the Windjammer on the Isle of Palms. The original was knocked out by Hugo. Many memories there - the 70's was a great time to be young. Old military saying - the worst place in the world is where you're stationed at, the best place in the world is where you just left.

The tps questions are good - I sell the wvsuperchip for Victorys and I have installed and tps'd a lot of them. The new HD fuel injection system and the one on the 06 and 07's are a complete mystery to me, but the shop foreman at HD of WV said it was an easy process. This is a closed loop system which makes a fuel system signal modifier useless. One thing I do know, the new plugs and the reset tps mad a difference. As I said, it did not completely cure the BUZZ but it sure helped a LOT and it improved low RPM drivability. I think that there may be a set - up issue with the 08's since there are other complaints. I know what seems to work and my Uly is certainly a lot happier.

As for the question about the sin - Years ago I owned 2 82 HD FXR's. Great bikes and the real import fighters designed by Eric Buell. Despite having the Elastomer mounts, Vibes came through. I had crushed mounts before. The FXR would jump and fly quite nicely, but some of the landings were ugly. But the way I look at a maintenance cycle, if it moves LUBE IT. As you may know, some petro products will cause rubber to swell, but tire shine is slick as snot. I liberally sprayed the heim joints and the front elastomer. Then I wipe up any overspray. It helped the FXR and it seems to have helped the ULY. A rag stuffed around the unit being sprayed helps keep down the slimy runoff and overspray. PS - when I wash any vehicle, I use a wax while you fry product and a real chamois. The silicon seeps into little places you cannot reach and provides a little more rust protection. This is a wet and humid area.

Speaking of snain, sometimes its just rain - like a cow pissin on a flat rock!

LOL

06 and 07 uly's do not need the proprietary handheld. The free ecmspy software and a cable are all you need to do it and flash your ecm. At least I think the ecmspy will do the tps reset. Yo can even modify your fuel maps with it. Pretty sure I was reading where someone used a multi meter to do the tps reset.

08 TPS procedure (from 08 service manual)

The TPS zero procedure should be performed if the TPS or ECM are replaced or if the ECM has been recalibrated.

To zero the TPS:

a. Set the Run/Stop switch to the Run position.

b. Turn the ignition key to the On position.

c. With the engine off, rotate the throttle grip from closed throttle position to wide-open throttle position and back to closed position 3 times holding the throttle grip against each stop for 1 full second.

d. Cycle the key off and back on. A properly calibrated TPS sensor will indicate 3.7 to 4.2 degrees.

I miss WV, spent 5 years there running all over the place....in a truck...in Grad school. The good thing is, now I have a great job and the $$ to own a Uly.

Might just have to get back to WV soon!

Thanks for the info and traffic - good to know the tps instructions. Horr - nice to know someone appreciates the WV secrets. Great place to ride.

Did 214 - 10 - 34 - 60 Lincoln Co. to St.Albans with a buddy who was on a GSXR. On the tight curvies and the chopped pavement, the ULY rocked. Once we went to supersonic, the gsxr went away. I've lost my balls. Going way over 100 mph in December and not having ridden much after my crash, the balls are shriveled up. Of course, being 52 helps keep things in perspective. I was still playing the game!
