I was wiring up my PIAA fog lights and Hella dual horn set up tonight and I thought I would do the mod that lets the high and low beam stay on at the same time. The idea is that you simply switch the two wires in the headlight loom connector - e.g., the city light wire with the low beam wire. Well, I noticed that the wire to the city light was of a significantly smaller gauge, so I checked and the city light is meant to run a 5W 194 bulb - the low beam on the bike is 55W. So everyone that is running that mod is running a 55W H7 bulb on wire designed to draw less than 1/10th that amount of power (or 5 Watts). Just FYI. . |

You are right, and thats a smart thing to think about. In this case though, I think you should be fine. 55 watts / 13.8 volts = 3.9 amps... http://www.powerstream.com/Wire_Size.htm So it looks like 22 gauge and up would be fine. A little bit of wire can carry a lot of current. I'm guessing those are at least 18 gauge... probably thicker. |

Johnboy, were you doing it from the correct side of the plug? Doing it from the Hot side of the plug, my wires were all the same gauge. Never looked at them on the light side. Maybe something else was changed over the model years we don't know about. |
