After running and tuning with the open air conversion using both K&N and factory filters, I tried something a little different.

I have a friend in the supercharger industry in CA that is working on a new improved blower system for my twincam HD motor. Numerous discussions with him about open air and VE for big twin engines open my eyes to helmholtz resonation and it's effects on performance.

With this in mind, I decided to perform a few informal tests, just for sheits and giggles. My 1250 engine with ported heads and American Sport Bike mapping is all geared around high flow in mid to upper rpms. Using lighter engine oils and driving in the upper rpms yields a permagrin that lasts for days. Unfortunately, when riding style changes to the "daily driver mode" an absence of torque in the lower and mid rpm range is noticed. With this in mind, I switched to the 07 inner air box and stock filter. The increase in bottom end was instantly observed, with the trade off being horsepower in the upper rpms. I then tried a fresh K&N filter with the 07 inner air box and a stronger mid range and quicker wind up was observed.

This was the first time I had tried this combination with the new motor, and I must say I am quite impressed. The Helmholtz effect from the stock inner air box combined with the higher flowing K&N filter seems to be a worthy combination for daily driving. I will check my afv and mileage this week just to see if everything is still in order.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

That was the combo that made my bike come to life as well. I only added the Drummer after the fact for sound, but was happy with it as well. On the '06 box and air filter my bike had no balls. It coughed and bucked and I had to gingerly give it gas to avoid that. The '07 and K&N swap were the best thing I ever did to the bike. '07 flash just restored mpg after the change. When I put the '06 box and filter back on it and reflashed it back to trade it in, it was right back to being a dog and not liking the throttle even with the Drummer still on it.
