Hello all! I have been lurking for a couple of weeks now trying to soak up all this great info... I've got my sights set on 2008 Uly, and want to dial in a few must have mods after the bike is broken in. I would like to get some opinions on what direction to go in respects to the muffler. I have been to the websites, and played the sound bites online. I want to know which one is louder, has a deeper tone, etc....

Also, I ride in a lot of forest lands, so I'm guessing I will need to fab some kind of spark arrester to the end of whatever muffler I go with. I know there will still be a sound level issue, but that dosn't concern me. Just don't want to burn anything down! If anyone has suggestions on how to tackle this please let me know. Thanks in advance!

I'm under the impression that the stock pipe is spark-legal off road. It's the "race only" mufflers on all the MX bikes that aren't. You can verify that with Drummer and if not, he can add a screen while the muffler is apart.

The Drummer is LOUD. HAs a nice sound and many non-riders said it has a nice "thump".
Very nice mid-range punch.

It will cost you low end TQ. I took mine off two weeks ago. I was sick of the bike constantly going into learn mode b/c of lean codition the pipe creates. Its real fun when your in a turn and it does its "learn" hiccup. Not in the mood to spend the $$ for a race ecm I took it off. I was amazed at how much low end TQ returned.

Chrisb,

Did you do only the muffler mod and not the remap and/or the airbox+airfilter mod? When I had my XR650, there was much time spent trying to get the jetting just right after gutting the stock muffler and making some airbox/filter mods. But when the carb had the right jets.... My motorcycle turned into a monster!! The change it made to the low to mid RPM range was night and day. I think if you did these other mods, then there's a problem with the map, and if you have yet to, then it would be so worth your time and money to do it!

I personally disagree with Chris' findings. The Drummer gave my bike a larger powerband. It would pull from about 1700RPM up smooth and hard. Look at any Dyno chart of a drummer and you will see it start before other maps. Very weird, but it worked great with the Buell motor. I also combined mine with the '07 airbox, stock ECM with '07 flash and had no hiccups or lean conditions. I tried the Race ECM with it and it was pig rich to the point of spitting raw fuel so I went back. It was very loud the first 500 miles, but after that it settled down into a very deep awesome sound. No rasp at all. Truthfully one of the best sounding exhausts on the planet to me. I wouldn't ride a Buell without one. The stock setup had nothing to offer me. The bike always felt like it was down on power had no sound except the mechanical mayhem of the engine to listen to. One of the best things I ever did to my bike.

I run the Specs op pipe with the servo in. It is loud and barks nicely when whacked WOT. Odie does an outstanding job and it gets attention everywhere I take it.

The exhaust shootout showed the Spec ops right up there with the higher dollar ones. I kinda like my bark, performance and looks for the budget $$ I spent.

I only did the muffler. Call Kevin at KDFAB. He'll tell you dont need a remap or the race ECM.

Everybody's opinion is subjective. Keep in mind I weigh 275lbs in gear. I need low end TQ.

I appreciate the feedback, though I would like to know more about the aftermarket mufflers ability to keep sparks flying out of it. Years ago, I owned a Yamaha dirt bike with a screen you could remove from the muffler, and on the XR650 there was this fan blade affixed about 6-7” inside the muffler to push the exhaust into the back of the muffler before exiting the pipe. I’m sure this will be a matter that needs to be dealt through whoever I buy the muffler from. Really I am interested in knowing if anyone out there had similar concerns and how they handled it.

Or maybe I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Hello Jmhinckle. Can you tell me where the dyno chart of the Drummer Mufller is on the site. I would like to compare it to my own. Thanks

For the money I would go with the Spec Ops hands down. Not only is the quality top notch but Odie is a good guy to deal with.

The spec ops really brings the Uly motor to life and sounds OOOOO so good doing it.
