My ROX risers just came in along with a set of Aprilia Tuono mirrors. I've got the '08 and have been told that the throttle cable is not quite long enough with the increased lock to lock turn-in to handle the ROX risers without re-routing the throttle cable. I will be using the Mike Best floating guide method of re-routing the cable behind the triple clamp which then gives the needed clearance while keeping the cable from being pinched against the frame on a full lock turn.

Now for my "never done this before" stupid question. How does one unhook the Uly throttle cable at the handlebar and then hook it back up again? Somehow, in 34 years and many many miles of riding, I've never had to change or adjust a throttle cable. This is a simple thing ... right?

When I did my City-X I didn't disassemble the cables. I just took the bars off from the mounts and worked the whole throttle grip assembly off the bar.

In this case, I really don't think I want to remove the whole throttle grip assembly. There's the brake cable and the grip heat cable attached and their routing is fine with the new risers. The only routing that is not fine is the throttle cable. I think I need to remove the throttle cable at the grip, re-route it, and then put it back?

It's not that hard to do. You have to disassemble the throttle mechanism at the grip by removing the two Phillips head screws. The two halves of the housing will then come apart. You can then slip the end of the throttle cable out of the socket in the throttle grip and it'll come out of the housing.

Important safety tip: pay close attention to how everything goes together as you're taking it apart. Digital photos are REALLY handy.

Thanks Hughlysses! Sounds easy enough ... will take the pictures to make sure.

Where is information on the "Mike Best floating guide"? I too have the Rox risers and need to complete the installation.

Cpilot ... Ran across Mike Best on the other (Adv*****) site. He is user mbfj40 there. He invented this floating guide which is a straight piece of stainless steel wire about four inches long with a circle loop on the end. Here is what he sent me ..

Hi Steve,

Holidays have kept me busy but I did get the little cable holder sent out a few days ago and you should be getting it soon. No Pics yet but you can call or e-mail if ya want.
I had to remove the top holder on the hyd brake line and I just let it "float" W/O the factory clamp. I loosened the banjo fitting at the master cyl and adjusted the fitting to point towards the triple clamps for a better look. It seems fine and I have found no reason to adress it further.
I kept the throttle cables in the factory shroud/cover where they come out from under the airbox, but instead of out the top of the upper triple clamp, I routed them under the top triple clamp and they come out between the frame and the upper clamp for the right fork tube, directly in front of the allen bolt on the rt fork tubes top triple clamp. The problem is that when you go lock to lock the cables will get pinched between the frame and the triple clamp.
Take the little wire "dealie" and stick the long strait end thru the hollow bosses of the new Rox-Risers. Now rout the throttle cables thru the opening on the "dealie" . The whole thing just floats there and allows the cables to move and not bind when you go lock to lock, but it will keep the cables from tucking in betweeen the frame and forks and getting flattenend.

Let me know what you think or if you have any questions. Mine is working great and the guys at the dealership thought it was so simple and works so good that they copied it for a spare in case they ever install risers on a customers bike.

I'm still hoping he will post some pics.
Steve

I have the Rox risers for the uly with the 08 trees. I just ran the throttle cables between the dash and tree on the left hand side, under the speedo. Works fine with no problems or binding.

Hi Treadmarks ... did you disassemble the throttle mechanism with the two phillips head screws and pull the two halves apart, disconnect the cables, re-route them, and then hook them back up?

And now for the more stupid question ... when I look at this throttle mechanism box that comes apart into two halves, I see two cables coming out side by side. Is the throttle cable really two cables?

So ... you're saying we shouldn't have any trouble routing the throttle cable(s), even on the '08 bikes with the wider lock to lock steering capability?}

Thanks.
Steve

I ran in my adjusters at the grip, then removed the cables from the throttle body to re route them.

It would be easier to remove the cables from the throttle grip to do the rerouting.

I did it the other way because I just can't leave anything alone.

It is two cables, one is push and the other is pull.

Hi Steve,
Been slow with the pictures, laptop computer crashed,(tripped on power cord and crashed to floor) Feel free to call for over the phone walk thru for your new toys. Poor weather this week in Ca. and been working lots of hours but I'll get some pic's for you-all here and at that "other" site. When I'm not working I'm riding, got bike first week of October and just past 5K miles.

Cpilot, I have an extra Guide thingie, send me a PM and I can get it out to you if you want.

What a great forum! While I may be the world's best computer programmer, I suck at mechanic work. I was still able to put the ROX risers on, adjust/re-route the cables, and replace the mirrors with the Aprilia Tuono's in just under five hours. (I was thinking it would take me the whole weekend!)

Mike Best, thanks so much for sending the guide. It is such a simple and yet effective means of guiding and protecting the throttle cables in their new routing.

Hughlysses ... thanks for the info on taking apart the throttle cable box at the handlebars. I did it but I don't ever want to try that again. Quite tricky how the cables wind around inside the two halves.

Love the new position of the bars.

Out riding ...
Steve
