for about a year now I have been experiencing weak starting. The dealer has checked the charging system connections and the battery twice and again said there is nothing wrong. I have installed the kuryakyn (sp) voltmeter and the voltage drops anywhere from 10v to 8v when starting. our mechanic at work said that if the charging systen and battery are good then it could be the starter motor! do any of you have any experience with what a starter motor acts like when it goes down. to isolate it I used jumper cables from another motorcycle battery and the voltage still dropped and had a weak start. I then started it with the Buell battery only about 6 times in a row. All were weak the voltage drops were inconsistent but the battery kept cranking. does this sound consistent with a bad starter? I thank you all in advance for your help.

Al's 1st. rule of electrical problems. All electrical problems are ground related; until proved otherwise.

So, check all ground connections; especially the one that grounds the engine to the frame. You will find it under the airbox floor.

Voltage drop test the starter circuits from the battery post (+) to the (+) post (threaded) on the starter. Volt drop test from the minus battery post to the starter motor case.
Voltage read on meter, whilst cranking; should be zero. Any voltage read on the meter during this test means there is resistance between the two test points.

HAHAHAHA Great 1st Rule!!!! You can not stress that enough. if I had a dollar for every time a bad ground ruined my day. I completely agree with everything mentioned above, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and say yes it does sound like a starter issue. if after cycling your battery down to between 8v and 10v it still cranks I would say that your battery is more thna likely not the culprit. I have found a couple loose ground connections on my Uly already with only about 2500 miles of ride time. so I'm am not in any way ruling that out and saying that it shouldn't be checked. let us know what you find.

Dans first rule of electrical problems- If I have an electrical problem, call a competent mechanic. Anything I do will only make the problem worse. (don't ask me how I know)

ULYNUT,
Where, pray tell, did you hire a competent mechanic? Oxymoron if there ever was one.
