I would fly into San Francisco, rent a bike there to see the Golden Gate bridge and north to see the gian redwoods, Really big trees are amazing and are a must for a first visit. Drop the bike off and fly to Vegas to rent another to see Utah and four corners. Touring between will eat up your days as the distances out west typically surprise europeans. Sort of like touring by Island hopping. You can really get a flavor of the country by skipping over the 300 miles of fields and deserts. Once across highway 50 in nevada is good for the soul tho.

check this site http://www.motorcycleroads.us/ out it has many roads to choose from and plan for. When I get board out on a road working I'll pick a ride and get off the usual roads.
found a ton of great rides i would have never found with a map recon.

I agree with all the posters...Highway 1 north out of San Francisco is a must-ride. The twisting roads up there are incredible. It's hard to stay on the road with the ocean to look at, too. I rented an R1200RT at Dubbelju Rentals in San Francisco (www.dubbelju.com) - they won't have enough for all of you, but it's worth touching base with them to give them a chance to help you. If you can, stay at the Heritage House Inn in Little River, CA. For my Utah/Grand Canyon ride, I rented a Hog at Eagle Rider near Phoenix, AZ. In my opinion, unless you're planning on hiking, you won't need to spend much time at the Grand Canyon to enjoy it. My buddy and I found that we got enough from the various overlooks. We really wanted to ride as much as possible and get to the next destination (Zion NP).

Hi we did last summer, 3 weeks car and motorbike combining, 12.000 km in total. Started in La to Morro Bay, Big Sur up to San Francisco, Yosemite To Carson City and Tahoe, the loneliest road to Salt lake, Yellowstone, Big Teton, Salt Lake again (do not ask why , Zion , Bryce and all national parks in the area, north Rim Colorado Canyon (Kanab), Durango Santa Fe ufff I am finishing ,
Flagtaff, Crater park, Colorado South Rim, Las Vegas (I am a looser), Mojave , La Jolla (San Diego) and go back to LA. ALL was impressive, so I could not say what is better. All people we found were really kind to us so we felt like at home. Going back to my country was funny to explain that Americans are not such kind of ogre (a lot of antiamerican feelings in my country)

OK your tempting me. I grew up in San Diego and would hitch hike to yosemite and work there during the summers. Utah and Bryce Canyon are also awesome. let us know if other riders are welcome to hook up with you. It may just be time for a walk about.

Enjoy the states....the missing colony.

East Tennessee rocks but I yearn for my home turf of California.

Once again thanks for all the info guys, really appreciate it. I've already got a pretty good offer of a group discount from Eagleriders for renting 20 bikes. I'm now thinking flying into Vegas is going to be the cheapest option (lots of flights/airlines to choose from who fly there from the UK) so we'll head West to the PCH from there, do the circular loop I originally planned (maybe with a few diversions if time permits) then head back to Vegas and the Canyon for some R&R before flying home.

Anyone's more than welcome to ride along with us for as long as they want - we can teach you the Queen's Englishand some new and interesting swear words

This is definitely a goer, lots of interest from the guys over here and I'm really looking forward to it. Not sure if I can wait 17 months though!

Thanks again.
