In the never-ending search for an "all-round" Uly tire, I just fitted a pair of Distanzias. Yes, rear is a 160/60, and it took a little circumferential coaxing with a ratcheting tie-down to get the bead to seat (I mount my own tires w/Harbor Freight stand and Mojo-Lever), but...the rear looks just fine. In fact it looks a little more like a proper DS tire since it's a tad bit narrower.

In a 200-mile tarmac blat through the New Mexico Jemez Mountains on Sunday the Distanzias work quite well; the rear is now well-scrubbed from wall-to-wall. Mucho fun.

On Thursday I'm playing hookey and doing a DS ride with 65 miles of dirt through NM Valle Vidal. The D's are no knobbies but they should be a little better than a pure road tire.

Boy do I ever love the Uly! Almost 38K miles and it just gets more fun.

P.S. I ended up getting about 1,000 miles from the rear Avon Pro-Xtreme SM rain tire, but get this: I got 6,443 miles from the Pro-X front! Yup, it was QUITE feathered...

Dr. Greg,
I'm on my second set of them...we met at Sipapu NM back in July when I had the first set on. I'll be running these tires on my next set also, expect 5k for the rear and 8-10k in the fronts...ride on!

Never had syncs on my bike, only the 616's
These handle flawless in all conditions, rain, gravel, sand, carving corners...ect..
Off road, I don't think the tires hinder me as much as the 17" front wheel does. If I had a 19" of 21" front wheel I think these tires would be better off road.

I have 3k on a set, and they do fine on the road. They are not mud tires by any stretch of the imagination, but do better than purely street tires.
A narrower wheel would probably make them better

OK, took me a while, but here's the Avon Distanzia 160-60 17 rear mounted. It fits just fine, and rails the pavement as well as any tire I've tried. And there's a little more tread for the dirt. It will be my tire of choice for the Uly until another 17" DS tire appears.

I've had the Distanzias on my G/S the last two years and they'll be my next pair too. Best tires I've ever had on it.

Looks great!

Do you think it'll bead ok with a small air compressor?
Eg, inflating after repairing a puncture on the road.

That's the only thing keeping me away from the thinner tyres.

But do you plan on repairing punctures by demounting the tire by the side of the road? If so, you're a better man than I...

I thought we all used plugs to perform roadside repair of tubeless tires. I can't imagine the bead unseating unless there was a crash (or something).

I expect to get at least 5K from the rear, and probably more. No reason to expect any wet traction issues. I'll certainly pass on my personal experiences.

I have the Distanzias mounted right now. in the last 2 weeks I had a long trip of slab riding and twisties (Cherohala Skyway, Dragon 4X's 300 miles of the blue ridge) and serious off road (toataly different story to post later). 2629 miles total in 2 weeks. This last trip put a total of 4700 some miles on the tires. Compared to the 616 they seem to last just as long as the Distanzias but the 160 profile I felt stuck better to the road wet and dry. I am totaly impressed with the 616 wet traction until I did 300 wet miles in the PA mountains and NJ SLAB on the Distanzias. The front tire sheds water better and my feet were drenched from the spray the 616's never did that. The Distanzia tire isn't designed for the slab. On the trip back from NJ to AL on 8 Nov, it was COLD!! but the tires wore real funny. The front tread started to cup on the center tread. I don't know if it was riding on a frozen tire or possible suspention issues. The rear tire after all the slab riding has a huge chicken strip almost 3" wide. Off road is well better than the 616 and a little better than the Perrelli MT60's I had on once. MT 60's a ton softer and lasted 3400 miles. 5000 on this tire seams to be reasonable. To bad I did the 5000 in less than 2 months and it tire shopping time again I think for the winter I'll try the Avon storms. This spring I will go back to the Distanzias.

Yep I was only refering to using plugs... so the bead shouldn't unseat with a typical puncture. Good to know, thanks : )

Okay guys,what sort of milage/kilometerage are you getting out of these Avons,cause if we want em here in Aus,we have to pay first and order them from O/S,and we are looking around $300+ for a rear.

Dr_Greg, based on your thread I gave them a try. I got 6,633 miles out of my Pirelli Sync tires, including a fair amount of off-road and a dozen 1/4-mile trips down Bandimere Dragway one hot August night.

For off-road enhancement I just put on the Avon Distanzias and love them for their more aggressive grip without really missing a beat so far on the street. Of course with gravel and sand about from snows, I have not pushed the street cornering like in July & August.

Mounting the 160mm was not a problem. Big diameter air hose and they popped into the seal on the rim, no belt to squish them into place even.
