Ok so the story first... I went to the local M/C shop the other day and took a look at the selection of tires especially the 17" ones, I found that the problem with mounting these tires that are more dirt worthy on a uly is the rim width specifically the rear rim is to wide...

SO how hard would it be to take a stock uly rear rim and narrow it by about 1" - 1.5"? Its aluminum would it be as simple as sectioning the rim and removing about .75" of rim width from between the lip of the rim and the spokes and then welding it back together? I know how to Tig weld Aluminum and i think that it would be really cool to put tires on a Uly like the ones on the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure which has a 150/70-17 on the rear and i would put a 120/90-17 on the front... Oh If needed the front of the muffler could be modified th allow for a larger diameter front tire... Hmmm... I want to put these tires On my Uly...

I've never heard of anyone narrowing a rim; but don't see why it couldn't be done.

Try contacting (call the phone number) this place: http://www.hdwheels.com/

They might be able to do the job, or at lease have some useful insight to the project.

As a side note, I spoke to a guy with a HP2 about mileage on those tires. He said <500 miles; if he's taking it easy...

Kosman in San Francisco used to widen wheels all day long for the older Hawk series bikes. He turned the rim on a lathe and press fit the shoulder from another rim then welded it with some seriously pretty welds. I think you would be better served trying to find a rim swap. There must be a wheel that will fit.

Does anyone remember the uly that someone did with laced wheels and a Ducati tail exhaust? I wonder if that might be a way to go...

I remember a reference to some laced wheels but I think they were real expensive.

There's been at least a couple of custom XB's been built with laced wheels; here's one:

You could get rims pretty much any way you want if you go this route.

Didn't someone have an XB9 that had dirt tires-ie a thinner rim? I want to know if that rim would fit a Uly. I want a set of more aggressive wheels/tires for off road too.
Wheel spacers are a lot easier than thinning a rim.
