Thats really cheap Dennis, and looks like a nice compact set of ballasts. Don't know about durability... I bought quality, and it was $200 for a single HID... but that was a while back. I don't doubt that wider spread adoption will be driving price down. So if you can find somebody with a good somewhat long term experience with that brand / setup, the price is sure right! | ||

Ballasts wear from turning on and off. Not sure how many "blinks" they have in them. They take a while to "get bright" as well. Maybe 5 seconds to get "headlight bright" then 30 seconds to get "almost normal bright" then a minute or so to get to "full blast and not so blue". | ||

I am seriously considering the 3500K Pure Yellow kit for the high beam. It will be my fog light. I don't really need the high beam at night. It just basically fills in the bushes. I think the yellow would be great to add definition as well as allow me to run at night without "cooking" anyone. Plus daytime visibility would be greatly enhanced. I didn't run the high beam where I would need to flick it on and off for concerns of ballast life. Others have and have had no problems. The bulb life is 3000 hours. That's longer than most of the bikes will be on the road. I don't know how many cycles the ballast and igniter have in them. The ballasts are one of the main things that go out in fluorescent lights. I don't know if that's due to continual use or if it's due to the click on and off. | ||

Ft_bstrd So once you cut the stock H7 plug you didnt reuse that wiring? I've found myself more than once using ACC mode to power stuff. Having a HID burning at the same time wouldnt be good for the battery. | ||

I didn't use the H7 wiring. I just clipped the wires and taped it off. The HID draws about 35 watts to generate 130 watts of light. Stock bulb draws 55 watts. Running only the HID is actually harder on the system than running both the HID plus the high beam. At the lower power draw the system is forced to shunt extra power back to the VR and stator. There is plenty of power to go around. Where the battery is hurt is when the power drain exceeds the stator's capacity to generate power OR the VR is shot and allows too much power to the battery. | ||

Remember the engine is off when in acc mode. So your only on battery at that point. "There is plenty of power to go around" I agree..when you are above idle RPM. When your in traffic or parades you need to shut down any non-essential power consumers. Heated gear, spotlamps, etc. Let the fan burn up the extra juice if there is any. I highy doubt there is much seeing how my heated gear (Jacket -n- Gloves) pluses the stock headlight when in traffic. | ||

Ft_bstrd , HID newbie questions... I saw in the older thread that you used the H7 kit from Aerostich (#4684),-- does it really matter when you change it out ? Seeing the pictures of your bike on Maximum's thread show the blue color -- is it a 8500K kit ?  I see the 3500K Texon kit isn't available in H7, so I'm thinking that doesn't matter -- or does it ?  I think I would want something more like the Texon 6000K lighting for color for me. (Message edited by florida_lime on November 14, 2007) | ||

More blue is less usable light, for what thats worth. It can also become "cop bait". The "white" HIDS are already pretty blue... at least relative to an normal tungsten or halogen light. | ||

I have factory HIDs in my car, and love them - at night. However, there's no denying that the white HIDs are less visible during the day than are ordinary yellow bulbs... That's the only reason I've not gone that route on my Uly. I don't want to sacrifice day time visibility to cagers (99% of my riding) for improved night vision (1%). I went with aux lights on the Ulytility bracket instead. | ||

I have the 8300K kit that Aerostitch sells. It's bluer than the 6000K kit. I wouldn't mind the 6000K kit to pick up just a little more brightness, but I'm not lacking for being able to see. I keep both my HID and my High Beam on during the day, so visibility isn't really an issue regardless of which temp bulb you pick. If I add the 3500K super yellow kit, visibility will be NO problem regardless. | ||
