Don't tease me! You met an "average" Buell rider? Nearly 4,000 souls I've met and I'm still dreaming of meeting an "average" one!

: )

My average Uly customer is 39.

42 with a two year old Uly. Does that make me above average? I like it more and more every day and mile.

ok, I forgot to add over the 5 foot 10 inches mark too. I swear ya gotta be corn fed to ride that bike. And statistically that is the average age of the Uly buyer here, now they are all characters and just a bit off of center, that is why they are on the Buell to begin with : D If we wanted a me-too bike there are a full showroom of harleys to choose from

The FXDX you are riding is a overweight, under powered, under braked, frame wobbling, foot peg grinding, aneemik piece of crap. No amount of money spent can even begin to cure all these shortcomings.
The reason you want more power and better handling now is you have become a rider, welcome to the group!

I'm not sure I completely agree with that. It is I am sure compared to a sportbike, but I was able to walk away from the other cruisers I was riding with. And I certainly don't think I'm anything special when it comes to riding skills. I'm really not ever expecting to be able to keep up with the sportbike riders, but I would like to be able to keep up with the sport tourer and standards out there. I think the Uly fits somewhere in there. I still think it very likely I'll end up with a Uly eventually. Unfortunately, finances are tight right now. I have a son in a private college and a daughter about to go to college. I thought I made a good salary until all these expenses hit. Anyway, I will do something as soon as the cash allows.

Actually of all your traditional Harley bikes the FXDX is the best 9lb sledgehammer for getting the job done. Std equipment: tach, dual front brakes, adjustable sport suspension, tall ground clearance, mid controls, low flat track bars. They had one of these the first year I did back to the track, it scoots around the corners well and probably has the best aggressive lean angle of the Harley's next to the VRSCR. It will walk a road king like it is standing still. Pity they quit building it. If you were looking for big block big performance, that is the bike to have (at 630lbs it is light for a big twin)

Hey Dan don't get me wrong, I like Harley's I own a late model Road Glide Some would argue maybe the best handling bike HD makes. Good ground clearence (for a HD)
Dual binders up front, Floor boards to get your feet under you, again fairly good for a HD.
So lets look at Sport tourers
FJR 1300 Yamaha, ST 1300 Honda, R1200RT BMW, ST4 Ducati, 1200 Norge Moto Guzzi, and the king of them all right now the new Kawasaki 1400 (Sorry if I left any ones favorite out)
No stock HD could even think of coming close to the handling ,performance,or braking capabilities of any one of these bikes. (Too Bad)
The same could be said about any of the current standards out there, ie Bandit, FZ, Tiger, BMW's K bike, Tuono, Multi Strada, Z1000 and a few other fine bikes I may be missing.
Case in point is it's a good thing HD has Buell, They offer sport,TT,Adventure/Sport tourer in a few different configurations and all seem to work fairly well.
I would take my Uly on any long distance trip you would take any sport tourer on.
And travel with any group of standards any day of the week.
Great handling ,good performance, great brakes, IMHO great looks, great fit and finish, and best of all its American, and it has been a long time since America could say they build a great motorcycle that can compete on a level playing field with stuff from Japan, Germany, Italy, and so on.
But hey keep that FX enjoy the crap out of it, It's a good bike for what it is.
It's just not on the same play field as a lot of other competent rides for a lot less money.
Oh yeah don't forget thats just my opinion, and you know as well as I do opinions are like A** Holes every one has one.
Enjoy life ride often
Sweet On

It sounds like your riding and and riding desires have grown to the point that you may have exceeded the capabilities of the Harley. A good handling cruiser is like the tallest midget in the circus. Consider it an insurance policy, sell the Harley, buy a used Uly. Exceeding the capabilities of that Harley will ruin your health record.
