Personally this just means that the Rotax powered ULY is "maybe" closer than ever. I could have cared less about the dirt bike but understand that others will be very disappointed.

Could be a plus, they want to improve the xb line. I don't think it would take much to make a Uly an exceptional Dual sport bike, not just an exceptionally fun street bike with some trail capabilities.

I'm right there with you EG. Good news to me. If I was buying dirt, it wouldn't have said Buell on it anyways.

Buell would have had a hard time just getting dirt bike riders to go into a Harley dealership, let alone buying a relatively unknown (to them) brand.
They would have had to spend a fortune on advertising.
Too bad though, I was looking forward to it.

To bad...it would of been nice to see an american company step up and get back into moto-x, super-x and dirt track. Especially with some HD money behind them. But it is what it is.

I want a '08 Uly in the spring. I don't think I can wait for an '09. Just not enough will power, ya know.

It is a great time to create a competitive flat track motorcycle. There have been as many as five different manufacturers in the same National event this year and a BMW tried to make a main last Saturday. Suzuki is making a great run this year and Aprilia is there every week. There is a new manufacturer with a very affordable bike on the horizon, http://www.cyclenews.com/ShowStory.asp?HeadlineID= 10857
I think a it is time for a Buell flat tracker to bring HD EFI to the big show. The more manufacturers the merrier.

More Flat track news on the BadWeb "RACING" forum for October 6th.

A watercooled ULY will still have 1st year growing pain issues to deal with. I'll wager there is never a new model that is problem-free.

Chrisgrant, I believe you can't go wrong with the 08' since it is a more refined version of the 06/07 ULY.

I thought the dirt bike thing from Buell was a dumb idea from the start...common sense must have prevailed...Guys buying dirt bikes will buy the top five, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and KTM and will never go to a Harley dealer looking for dirt bikes in any great numbers. The dealers must have raised hell, thinking they had to take on Buell dirt bikes....AKA spider web collectors.

Sod the dealers. I liked the idea of a Buell dirt bike and actually was hoping to buy one provided I liked it.

As much as I like the notion, it's probably a wise decision to discontinue the MXer. MXers age in dog years. Buell would have to double their R&D department to keep up with the Big Five. They would have to provide factory support too. Plus the fore mentioned dealership questions.

Could it be that this was a smoke screen to keep the 1125R under the radar? (I love how rumors start.)

I do not believe it was intended as a smoke screen.

Although it would be tough I would have taken the necessary steps to learn more about that market. That at some time or another may very well be a necessary step for H-D/Buell to take. Dont forget, all the other manufactures had a learning curve with thier dirt product as well.

I know it wasn't a smoke screen, and suspect it had nothing to do with knowing the market.

I take that back. It had *everything* to do with knowing the "market"... the stock market, not the bike market.

Unfortunately it was guys in suits from Milwaukee and Wall Street, and not guys with helmets from East Troy. Long term growth and strategic investment are not very hot commodities right now.

They ought to set up another market called "the growth exchange". A company must be exclusively sold in that exchange, and every investment must be held for 10 years before it can be sold. We need to protect companies from their stock holders.

As long as it's out in time for me to kit it up and ride it in the 450 Moto class, it's all good.
