Hypothetical question here-first, a bit of background. Just got my 06 Uly back from the dealer after I dropped it off for slight surging issues at steady or light throttle(runs great otherwise). As expected, they did'nt do much except inspect the plugs and reset the AFV to 100. Feels a bit better, but slight surge remains, esp when not fully warmed up-which takes a long time, btw. So i assume that's a lean condition, right? Would the race ecm work with the stock exhaust? I don't want to go loud and am not seeking more power-smoothness is the goal. Is it a plug and play job? If I do this, should i go K+N as well? FWIW, its got 2200 miles, tps reset has been done-by dealer. thx guys

I did Race ECM and filter. for about 5k miles, then I opened the air box. Took the servo off when I installed the ecm. Ran great the whole time. Now I put a drummer on at 10k. Runs and sounds great. Ran great all the time, but was especially smooth when I had the stock setup : )

terrible1-

so yours was smoother stock? do you mean 100% stock or with race ecm and stock exhaust? i was hoping the richer race ecm might cure my (apparent) lean surge. mine's not too bad, i just feel it could be a bit better(smoother), and maybe warm up a bit faster. thx

100% stock. If I remember it right, only had it that way for first 1k miles and I did the first 1k miles in 4 days.

Through those 4 stages I had it in:
1. Stock
2. Race ECM, K&N
3. Open Air Box
4. Drummer Exhaust

I have really never noticed any type of surging after cruising at 3k RPM's for a few miles. The main thing I have noticed is where the power band is. When it was stock there was constant power throughout the RPM range when I had the race ECM, K&N and the open air box it depended on where my exhaust valve was, if it was closed I had smooth power band, open I had more top end power with a more noticeable curve. (I never fastened the muffler servo which was a mistake, one or the other would have been much better than both random. And now with the drummer it has more of everything with the same power band as the race ECM and filter.

I don't quite know anything about Buell's surging other than what I have heard from other posts, which there have been a ton of. But I am more of a primal cyclist. When I hear surging I think there are only a few things it could be. With the newer bikes I guess it could be the ECM or some signal the ECM is getting but I usually think:

1. Bad fuel
2. Intake Leak
3. Obstruction in fuel line
4. Timing off

The ECM related ones such as maybe you have a crank position sensor going out which is sending mixed signals to the ecm which is constantly trying to adjust to the new signal or stuff, is out of my control so I try not to worry about it. The rest of the stuff I am somewhat in control of and that is my area.

I hope at least some of this helped you in some way. Though I think it very well may not be when I summed up my response by saying I have never really had a surging issue! Good Luck!

The race ECM, would probably help you, but is it worth the money? It is if you go all the way with an open airbox and a race pipe/muffler of some kind. Then again, a bike should run well the way it was built without needing to buy any more stuff.Just my humble opinion.

I guess I am being a pain in my own ass here, because the surge(after lengthy warm up, which appears to be common) is minor. Half the time I'm wondering if its the wind blowing me around, or involuntary bar inputs that i'm feeling. Then I slow down to about 35 in 2nd gear and realize that it does feel like a lean 'hunting' surge. It doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the bike, I just feel it could run just a wee bit better, and 200$ for a new ecm seems a small price to pay-IF that would solve the issue. I'm really not that anal...or a pansy....I swear. thx for the help, y'all}

Everyone mentions a 'surge' at 3000 RPM --I have a bad stumble at that RPM, but not what I would describe as a surge.

Dictionary.com has what I call a surge --

9. Machinery.
b. pulsating unevenness of motion in an engine or gas turbine.

My '07 has a 3K stumble that s VERY pronounced when cold.

Are we talking about the same thing ?

I agree with Florida_lime. I have always had the 3k stumble, hiccup, burp, fart, bucking bronco type of thing and it happens warm or cold. Cold is the bucking bronco where as warm is more the slight stumble. I used to have a low RPM surge riding 15 to 25 MPH in 1st or 2nd where the bike kept hunting for different speeds under a steady throttle. That went away when I swapped to the '07 lid and ECM remap. I think we are getting the two confused.

I recently made the change to the race ecm and K&N filter, keeping the stock exhaust.

I preferred the bike in it's stock condition and will be returning it back to original soon.

The race ecm is a simple plug and play swap.

I kept the stock exhaust, but wired the bypass open. It's a bit louder this way, but not obnoxiously so. I actually like the way it sounds in this configuration.

I also drilled the stock airbox as I have read about others doing.

Please keep in mind that what follows is simply my opinion and is very subjective.

The result has been that it takes longer for the bike to warm up. The off-idle stumble/surging has become noticeably worse. The much complained about pinging problem is now very noticeable and frequent- when the bike was stock I didn't notice it at all until I read about it here on BadWeb, then I could create the conditions to make the bike ping, but it never happened under my normal riding conditions.

The bike does seem to make quite a bit more power in the higher rpms now. It also takes a while to get into the new power band though - the power seemed really broad, smooth and flat when it was stock. Now it seems sluggish at lower rpms and has a dip in the mid-rpms before the power really kicks in when it revs higher.

For my use, it seems to have taken away too much of the bikes original street friendly qualities.

Jmhinkle-my condition sounds a bit like yours. it jerks noticeably from idle to 2500(hard to do low speed offroad stuff), then 2500-4k it just sort of 'pulses', or hunts. mind you, this is my first twin, i'm used to old japanese fours(a yamaha xs11 to be exact, the smoothest motor ever outside honda's flat 6). it is roughest when cold, then only mildly annoying when warm. again, i am only assuming, but i thought what appears to be a lean condition could be cured by a richer mixture-ala race ecm. did you have yours remapped? if so, how? thx again fellas

Portero, I'm a bit confused as your last post is exactly the opposite of what I had while your first sounds very close. Jerky at low speed and hunting at higher sounds like fueling issues, could be as simple as needing a "good" TPS reset. I also live at high altitude which means I run on the rich side usually anyways. I've done what I can to lean mine out some. The Race ECM did not work for me at all. Cut my MPG down by 10-15 and was backfiring and loading up like crazy. It seems to work really well for most normal altitude people. I would start with a good TPS reset in your case. Do you have ECMSpy or VDSTS?

I would get the direct link(tune on a dyno) instead of the race ecu if I had todo it all over again.

Jmhinkle-sorry if i've been vague, its not on purpose. it does buck and jerk at low rps(sub 2500), then just surges lightly as revs rise, or at steady throttle. VERY noticeable when cold, but still there when warm, if i'm paying attention. FWIW, the dealer 'said' the tps reset was done at the 1k service, about 1000 miles ago. i do not have any of the hardware to do it myself, but there may be someone in my area who does. i suppose i should start there first. thx
