I'm going to a track day this weekend @ Buttonwillow and wonder if the suspension settings would be any different from my normal everyday set-up (maybe a little stiffer?). For those of you who have done a track day what did you do?

I was just at Pocono Inside Pass track day and I asked for some ideas about suspension setups. Moose from Liberty took the time to direct me to Classic HD and a great fellow named Art Diaz. Art races and he took the time to make some adjustments on mostly my front end (06 Uly, stock springs). Back was about ok.

I was trying to follow him and he was adjusting to prevent excessive sag on the front end via preload -- no more than about an inch or inch and a half if I remember correctly. Could be off on this however.

He then adjusted rebound such that the front did not "bounce". If he compressed the front it rebounded in one movement without any secondary bounce or movement.

My rear setting were about ok. When he was done he said both the front and back should compress and rebound without secondary bounce and bring the bike back to a stable position.

That is where I rode it and it was ok with the tire pressures low.

I wish I could have a video tape of what he did because it was hard to get it all even though he was very patient in explaining what he was doing.

I was very impressed with how helpful the dealers present were. Also, the instructors were extremely helpful if you just ask. One guy followed me around and gave me pointers and then took me to a white board to illustrate some of what I could work on. It is hard to do this at first when you just want to get on the track but it is really a benefit worth taking advantage of once the day gets going in my opinion.

I worked with a trackside suspension outfit during a trackday this spring. With my 200 # body and standard settings the back end would jack up and down a lot when the chassis was loaded up. He ended up maxing out the damping on the shock to control this.

Here are some setting I think work well. Pretty much all the sport riding books have a suggested setup. These sag numbers are from Keith Code.

Track Setup
-----------

Static Sag - Front: 15-25mm
Static Sag - Rear : 20-25mm

Rider Sag - Front: 25-35mm
Rider Sag - Rear : 20-30mm

Setting compression and rebound are a little more of a soft science.

Another way to go would be to use the "agressive riding" settings in the owners manual. I found that the settings provided by Buell were quite good (and maybe even great, but I need stiffer springs...)
