how high should they be from the bottom? Mine are up about 1.5"

I've written of this twice before but here it is again. The service manual says that they need to be well below the air temp sensor that resides between them so that the hot oily mist does not affect and damage the sensor. They only need to be poking a bit through the air cleaner base plate. 1/2" to 3/4" max.

No need to trim.Just push them thru their base till you feel they are below the sensor.

If you ever need to remove the base plate to get at the throttle body you just pull them (hose ends) down from underneath and out. Dfish is right on the money.
