Appleton HD/Buell in Clarksville, TN has the best service guys (Richard and Scott) I have ever met in the HD dealer network. http://www.appletonharley.com/custompage3.asp?pg=s ervice Long story short... It appeared that my voltage regulator went out after a 200 mile shot from AL to KY. As I was pulling onto post at Ft Campbell the engine light came on and I lost my speed and Tach and aux power to my GPS. This had happened before when I lost my first voltage regulator. Macon HD did a great job at fixing it the first time. NOTE: you can ride for about 4 miles at 2500rpm after you lose the instrument cluster power. 10:30 9/11/07 I call up Richard at the service department tell him the issue and instead of getting the you have no clue what your talking about speech form the service guy, he agreed!! He said, "they would back me up" with troubleshooting. Either Richard has done the job a long time to get out of long conversations or he really did agree with me. 15:30 They trailer the bike 20 miles looked at it before close and called (17:45) me with the diagnosis. The connector between the voltage regulator and the stator had melted because of contact to the engine case and fried the voltage regulator. The service guys didn't place any blame on how or who made it fail but went straight to getting parts and fixing my bike. The parts manual doesn't have the connector part number to the stator but they found it and had both parts overnighted for me FREE!! 10:00 9/13/07 I get the call that they have the parts and are installing them right now. I could pick it up at noon after they finish washing it for me!!!!!! Holy crap it all I could think. Is this how all Harley owners get treated? This is how Buell owners should be treated too. Well that is how I got treated at Appleton’s HD of Clarksville, TN. The bike was down for a total of 40 hours from breakdown to out the service department door. This all happened while the shop was getting ready to sponsor the local toy ride for the year. Towing to the dealer: $0.00 Ride back to hotel: $0.00 Overnight of parts: $0.00 Key ring with logo: $0.00 Clean bike to ride: $0.00 Treated like a customer that bought my bike from that dealer: Priceless!!! | ||

Buell HD of Vallejo, Ca. Has been great as well, fixed horn rattle, reset TPS, checked out the bike and washed it, no charge and I also purchased my Uly elsewhere. | ||

So how many regulator connectors have you gone through? Interested in preventive measures. | ||

The first regulator failed without the connector being melted. I was doing allot of cold wet riding during a GA winter. The second regulator was on for about 5,000 miles. I think when they put the wire bundle back under the front drive pully cover, it was placed against the block where it melted and shorted the regulator. Just may want to check if any work is done in that area on your bike. | ||

 Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up. It does seem that the regulator is a possible point of concern. After rear wheel bearings, dying fans, and overcooked brats on the rear cylinder... not necessarily in that order.  |
