Thanks for the heads up. It was good article, but what's up with their fuel mileage? I've never been able to pull my '06 down to 39mpg. Can it be that the '08 have slipped by 10mpg?

Wouldn't most want to see a comparison of the Uly vs. the GS rather than the R1200R?

In a short article, I think the review was pretty fair. Heat, fan noise, rear brakes, and some surging is something that has been repeated a lot with this bike (even by owners and fans).

I will pick with the issue of maintenance not factoring in to final selection. The start of the article was simple air-cooled bikes but somehow the frequent and expensive maintenance on the Duc didn't matter.

The heat and fan issue are going to be a dagger in the bike's acceptance for a lot of people. I am still holding out hope that Buell is listening to the Press and finds someway to address this or like the writer says, we will all be looking at Rotax engines in the future because I just don't think Buell will sell enough of this configuration given the competition and the reviews.

I saw that article about a week ago, i also wondered how they got such horrible gas mileage, as the worst i ever gotten was 48MPG, and that was because i was cruising in 4th instead of 5th. Normally i get about 56-59mpg

I have never gotten close to 50mpg. I normally get 40-45.
I think the article is fair, and accurate for what the bikes are.

Anything with a 17 inch front wheel is not a dirt bike.

Funny because my mileage went up when I started running at higher revs. 60 is the best I have ever gotten I have usually gotten around 43 to 45.

They did mention the higher maintenance on the Duc: "Where the Multistrada comes up a bit short is in its long-haul comfort and convenience. Valves will need expensive and relatively frequent adjustments, and its chain final-drive system requires messing and fiddling that are unbecoming compared to the belt- and shaft-drive competitors."

but they said they'd put up with it: "If it were ours, we’d pop for the accessory centerstand ($245) to make oiling and adjusting that messy chain a bit easier. In the eyes of our testers, that hassle is worth the sporting thrill and all-around goodness of the Multistrada."

I wonder if the surging is partially due to the Buells being lean enough to not needing a cat conv.

Too lean and you get a "lean miss" which will drive the COs up. Too rich and you drive the HCs up. Possibly the mixture is lean enough at low revs and small throttle openings to be right on the edge of a miss and cause the surge. Rumor has it there is a "re-program" for the ECU to fix this.

The "surge" most 1150GS owners complain of in the 3000 to 3500rpm range is due to lean fuel mapping at those revs. This is so the bike will pass Euro emissions regs, even with a cat.

I personally love the fan on my Buell. I have an oil-temp/dip stick that I check most times I get off the bike and it rarely exceeds 190 degrees F and never over 200. I wonder how hot that Duc's oil gets. Buell engineers get a large thumbs up from me for protecting my oil and engine from overheating. That fan is cheap insurance for a long lived engine. Yeah, I know, that emoticon looks like he's whacking it.

These writers seem to have something against Buell/HD IMHO, My 07 surged and popped a bit until I put some miles on it, sounds to me like the bike should have been "run in" a bit more before the test. My bike just gets better each time I ride it. The frame technology and performance was underrated in the article and 2 up the bike is tough to beat.

Take the Uly slip on a Drummer exhaust have it mapped and tuned, take equal riders and run the bikes on some twisties and then lets see what bike comes out on top and gives the most fun and enjoyment for the money, my guess is the Uly.

That's a common problem reviewing certain bikes, BMW boxers in particular. Everybody knows the boxers smooth out after 15-20,000miles, but what reviewer doesn't knock them for being "rough". That's where sites like this and experience from actual owners helps in the decision. if that's their only beef and we know the bike will smooth out with miles, then who cares where the bike placed in the standings as long as all the other buttons were pushed. :-)
