OK, maybe one of you guys can help.

Awhile ago I rear ended a pick-up (yes, yes I know, not supposed to do that!). Very low speed, slid on wet, new pavement, didn't fall, just hit his bumper, no injuries, no damage. Everything works (blinkers, both head lights, break light from both breaks) but no horn...OK, what ever I thought, get a new horn. Put a new horn on and it still doesn't work! The fuse is good, there is no obvious damage to any wires under the wind screen, all connections are tight. What am I missing? Is there an in-line fuse somewhere?. I haven't looked at the service manuel yet. I'll give it a look tonight.

Thanks for any help...

Snub, it might be completely unrelated but I had my horn fail when the earth wire connection broke right at the crimp that is attached to the frame. This one of the 2 earth crimps screwed to the lower front of the steering head. In my case the rubber boot of the left hand headlight was snagging the earth wires at one point of the 'sweep' of the forks. The flexing eventually broke the wire internally and left the insulation intact making it a trickier one to spot.

Try running hot lead jumper wire to the horn, if you put power there and no beep, ground would be suspected. If it beeps look to the positive side. Wiring and or switch. Check for broken wires in the harness where it comes down through the hanger at the forks and out to the fuel tank.

Doesn't rear ending trucks suck?

I'm embarrassed to admit I pulled the same trick last year on my VFR. So, you're not alone. Years of responsible riding, then 2 seconds of distraction on my part...SPLAT! : (

And the winner is.................

RAYS

One of the "Earth Grounds" was broken at the crimp. Good grief, those buggers are hard to see! It was still sticking into the crimp but when I touched it it fell out. Looking at the end of the wire there is nothing sticking out of the insulation.

This may not be related to the accident, maybe it was just a coincidence that it happened at the same time......in any event, mystery solved!

Thanks all
Tim

Snub - glad to be of help.

I re-routed both of those earth connections to be positioned 180 deg from standard to pull the wires closer to the head-stem and avoid fouling the headlight wires.

When I fixed it the other (the unbroken one) wire had been rubbing on one of the steering head pinch bolts and had worn through the insulation. I considered putting electrical tape on it but I figured that would do the same thing. I put a small piece of rubber tubing over the wire and taped it up. I also turned the wires (only 90 degrees) to get away from any other areas of friction.
