Is there any harm from an overfill? I wasn't paying attention as i filled the swing arm with a 1 gallon container. It overflowed. I tilted the bike to try and get as much out as possible. I didn't have a baster. It is still registering in the overfill on the dipstick. How much oil can the crank hold if it were in an upright position? Just curious. Dealers have the bikes vertical on the bike lift when they are doing service. |

You will get blow out. I think you would be best advised to get it out and down to around 2.5 x's on the dip stick hot and level. |

Hey Tread, Flash: "I didn't have a baster" was part of Irelage's post. |

I didn't have a baster either. But my wife did. |

My wife's turkey baster was retired from basting duties after my over-fill event. It services my CRF450R now. |

Why don't you just drain the oil again into a clean container and pour in the correct amount? Or undo the oil plug almost all the way out, then re-tighten it after a half quart or so has drained out. |

Last time I checked my oil level it had gone down rather suddenly to just under all the XXs. Which I thought was kind of weird. I didn't top it off thinking I'd recheck it before doing so. Now I'm concerned about what "hot" means exactly. I mean if it really is too low, couldn't it be kind of bad for it to run it to get it hot enough to check it? How long do you run yours before it is hot enough? And by "level" do mean on level ground (I have a level and can test that) or level latterally? As is up and off the side stand? thanks |

Mine did the same thing on a hot ride. Right at the refill line. I put in just enough oil out of the new container to take it to the top of the window in the container. Today I was riding, brisk 58 degrees out, and checked it when I got home. Fan running away most of the ride through town. I am at 2 x's below the top full line. Yesterday 2.5 x's up from the fill line. Apparently ambient outside temps affect level also. I imagine it has something to do with how cool the oil cooler is. Just a guess. |

Warmed up means ride it 10-15 minutes. Level means on level ground ON THE SIDE STAND. Most of us have found that if you fill it above the bottom two X's it will spuge it into the air box. I fill mine to the second X and it will stay there for 1500 to 2000 miles. When I tried to keep it at the top mark it kept going away. I found it in the air box. |

I guess I better open the airbox up and reclaim my oil. Damn I miss the little window thingy the KLR has. I have to put a bib on the swing arm when ever I pull the stick or it dribbles all over. I get oil spilled around all the oil maintenance areas (swing arm, transmission, oil filter) when I do this drill. I spend more time cleaning up then it takes to do the change. Cancels out or offsets the no chain maintenance. |

Yes, use paper towels/rags on the swingarm and tin foil under the oil filter to reduce clean up. Oil service is no harder on the Uly than any of my other bikes, easier IMHO. And they STILL have to futz with the chain afterwards. |
