I have an 06 Uly. Today it wouldn't start for me. Turned the key on and the normal light and noise sequence happened. Pushed the starter button and NOTHING. Checked battery terminals. They were tight and clean. Fuses were good. 12.7 V at battery. The lights did not dim when button was pushed. The bike gave no indication that the button was being pushed...not a sound. I then put it in gear and went from 1st to N to 2nd and back a few times until I found N again. The bike then started. I never have to have the bike in N or have the clutch pulled in. It tries to start as long as the key is on and the button is pushed. Any ideas of what the problem is? |

Sounds like a faulty neutral switch to me. The starter shouldn't work unless the bike's in neutral or the clutch is pulled in. |

"The starter shouldn't work unless the bike's in neutral or the clutch is pulled in." Mine must be weird then. It has never cared if the bike's in N or the clutch engaged or any other combination. I did try to pull the clutch in when I tried to start it. It didn't help. |

Yeah, it should never start in gear unless the clutch is in. Bad Neutral sw. You still under warranty? |

Yes, it is under warranty. It's always started w/o clutch engaged and in gear. I thought it was normal. Is it a hard fix? My mechanic is 300 miles away. |

Andre, I do not think there is a neutral or clutch switch on a 06 Uly. Your problem sounds like a minor electrical connection. Check and make sure all the relays are seated in the fuse box. The relays are interchangeable. You can always sacrifice the aux relay when you are on the road. Do not store the small Buell tool pouch next to the fuse box. I think the reason the engine started after the gear change is due to your weight on the seat. By pressing on the seat you might have corrected a poor connection under the seat. |

I have an 07 and hit the start button once while I was on it and it jumped forward. I am curious now if it does have a clutch switch. I never did try to duplicate it but now I think I might to see what happens. |

I just checked the sm and the 07 does have a clutch lever switch. |

I had my clutch lever off and there is a plunger switch in the assembly. You can't see it unless you remove the lever but you certainly can see the two wires leaving the clutch lever handlebar clamp. |

If the Uly is similar to an XB9R, there are steering diodes in the fuse block that are part of the starter interlock. If, say, a diode is replaced with a fuse or if the diode is shorted to itself or to ground, then it's possible to start the bike w/o the clutch (diode 1) or w/o being in neutral (diode 2). Verify the arrow on both diodes point towards the center of the fuse box. If the diodes are reversed, then neither clutch nor neutral switch functions will allow the starter to activate, the opposite of what is happening with your bike. Another possibility I hinted at in the first paragraph. There could be a short in the diodes wiring from the clutch and/or neutral switch to ground. That could defeat the starter interlock and allow the condition that your bike has. |

Thanks for the replies. It seems ok now. I'll wait 'till it happens again. |
