. . .anyone else had problems with an XB shifter spline shaft binding? My Uly shifter is "sticking" and not returning to it's "at rest" position after both up and downshifting. In order to accomplish a shift to the next gear, I have to "nudge" the shifter back to "at rest" with my foot . . .and then, and only then . . .will the bike shift.

More to follow . . .photos, diagrams, long winded explanatories and such

Has anyone been in the primary lately? If the primary housing gets misaligned during installation, it can cause the shifter shaft to bind. You can drain the primary, loosen all the bolts, and see if your problem goes away. If so, carefully re-torque making sure the shaft's not binding while you're tightening.

Well . . ahem *scuffs ground with toe . . .head down*, I have spent some time working in the primary. I did the "9" conversion in July . . .and then because I was given the wrong primary gasket from a usually reliable dealer (who I will not name here) . . .I had to go back into the primary again a couple of weeks ago to install the new gasket and seal (the seal was weeping). In my own defense . . .I have put hundreds of miles on the "9" conversion and it shifted without sticking. It was, however, right after the new gasket and seal that the problems began.

I do not recall there being much "wiggle room" with the cover to case alignment . . .the fore and aft sleeves on the case seem to do the alignment job. I will, however, remove the cover once again and see if there is any possible adjustment in the alignment.

I was wondering if there was something about the replacement gasket that caused the binding . . ie, it being thinner than the one it replaced, thus closing down the clearance between the splined shaft, case and primary cover? Doubling the gasket would seem to be a way to explore this scenario.

One thing I did notice during the last cover removal . . .with the cover and gasket on and the primary cover bolt only snugged up . . .the splined shaft had a little endplay. Once I had torqued the bolts, there was no endplay and the binding returned unabated.

Any ideas?

Update:

I was finally able to resolve the sticky shifter by removing the shoulder from the shifter shaft bushing in the primary cover. I have no idea how the clearance between the case . . .shifter shaft . . .and primary became so tight, but after some careful work with a Dremel tool the Uly is back to shifting like "buttah" . . .

I knew I was making progress when I was able to cause a little end play in the shifter shaft after torquing down the primary . . .previously, all end play vanished as soon as the cover bolts were snugged up.
