Quieter fan and a taller 5th gear would make mine perfect

"6 speed tranny with a lower 1st gear"

A heck of a lot of engineering went into these bikes and it's tough to outsmart it.
I have a theory that the tallish first gear is that way for a reason. I've noticed when out in the stix tooling along in first, the fan DOES NOT RUN and the bike remains quite cool. The high first gear results in lower RPMs, a cooler engine and can run this way all day.

- Six-speed tranny with a low first gear.
- Better heat shielding under the seat.
- Quieter fan "XB's are quiet until you turn them off."
- Cruise control
- XB12XL - "Low" option.
- XB12XA - "Adventure" option - kicked out front with at least a 19" front wheel and longer swing arm and knobbies.
- 120hp at the crank. 105rwhp.

Diversify the thing and it will sell more units. A low Uly would be a must have if I worked at Buell. The Adventure thing well that's just thinking out loud. The up in HP will make it competitive with anything in its market.

Sounds like a lower first gear and a tall sixth gear is getting alot of play... I hope the anony's pick up the vibe

I definitely like the lower first gear idea.

And how about a gas gauge?

At an engagement one time I asked Erik about a lower first gear and either a sixth gear or taller fifth. He nodded and agreed with a minor explanation about HD needing to make the transmissions common. He didn't say, but I'm sure that has to do with production expense.

It was my argument that if I was to ride this Uly off road with a first gear idle speed of 11 mph, and these type of tires, one might really have to heat up the clutch or fall down a lot.

Buell has tweaked the motor well, now HD needs to let them tweak the crap out of the trany. There must be a lot of people doing the xb9 primary swap to get the lower first because I am still waiting for one. I do not like giving up my high fifth but I would rather control my need for speed and have more control down low. I would also narrow up the seat supports some, I mean the two rails on either side that come off the tank. Have them sweep in just a 1/2 inch and the height would be even less of an issue. Go for an oval exhaust saving a 1/2 inch in height would also allow the bike to be lowered a 1/2 inch and retain the clearance. Make the spot where the headers mount to the muffler the farthest forward part and you might be able to squeeze in a 19 inch wheel.

The answer is not in the tranny for a higher 1st or a taller 5th. the answer is the drive sprocket on the rear wheel.
Ever change the gearing on a dirt bike by changing sprockets?
Buell could do something similar.
The only down side is lower 1st gear so goes 5th.
A 6 speed would make this very plausible,
nice low 1st gear nice tall 6th gear every one is happy Buell sells more bikes, HD dealers see the importance of supporting the Buell line we intern as owners get better service and more representation at more dealerships.
Everyone is happy, so its simple bring on the 6 speed.
PS My new bike has six speeds

6 Speeds are for woosy bikes that have low torque and lots of HP high up in the RPM range. 5 Speeds are lots maybe just spread the ratio over a slightly bigger range to make those who want to do slow stuff happy. No other changes please I like my Uly just as it was made. 06 model in black of course. They are the stealth version.

I tend to agree. After the discussions of the XB9 primary, and suggestions on riding the highway in 4th, I've been doing so. The motor is happier, it gets better mileage, it runs slightly cooler, it's snappier, and I'm happier.

A 6th gear would be superfluous. A lower first, would not. Simply putting the XB9 primary on from the factory would be grand (I understand the EPA thing though), so that and a taller 5th would make it all good.

Just put in the 5 speed gear spread of my 97 Electraglide. It goes way slower in 1st and does 60 mph at 2500 rpms. AND the ULY engine has more hp and comparable torque.

Cruise control! The new Harleys have them, give it to us as an option.

Once again, this bike gets miles. Mine has 7400 in less than 4 months with 3 weeks away on business.

OK OK I stand corrected, I still would like a little lower 1st gear, but you guys are right on about the 5th gear it is plenty tall enough.
I find myself in 4th all the time when I am on the freeway. I hardly ever look for another gear once in 5th.
On my GS (BMW) I was always looking for the next gear when I got out on the freeway.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that everyone I have ever talked to that owned a GS, A V-Strom,Grand Canyon, Elephant, Caponord etc.etc.. all have had the same complaint about 1st gear not being low enough.
Every day I own this bike the happier I become with it.
It is fantastic on the twisty stuff, cruises well at freeway speed and is very capable off road (Not as good as my GS was but close)

Cruise control would be a nice addition, as would be a quieter fan.

I have a question:
Why get a Blood Hound, then have him de-barked?

I've done a reasonable amount of off road stuff on the Uly, particularly 2 up, I'm putting the XB9 Primary in as soon as the bike is back near a Dealer!

With the speed limits in my town, I couldn't imagine going to the XB9 gears. I'm in dire need of 6. First works just fine for me in the sand although a tire with retractable paddles would be awesome. Of all the stuff I've seen though, a factory cruise control would be most appreciated in my case.

Hi Snub, off to Cambodia in 2 weeks to ride the Uly to Bangkok, then shipped to Brisbane, have to look for a window to get to South America, probably next year! how's yourself?

Oh yeah, there's a few river crossings, still after the ultimate "exotic Uly" pic!

The Uly's getting a bit too much rest, we're working 6 week rosters and living on a yacht, soon to change when we get her back to Oz!
