OK guys. I need to prove a point to the Mrs. here. I showed her the Uly that I'm getting on the computer and she said that I'm to old for a bike. Thats not even a Harley, it's a sportbike. What the heck is that supposed to mean. I must say, I'm not easily offended, at all, but that pissed me off a little. I am choosing the Uly because I don't want to go to Hooters on Wed. nights to show off my chrome. I want to hit the mountains, Blue Ride Parkway and just get out of town. She says that I'm to old to have a bike and I'm trying to hold on to my youth or mid-life crisis or something like that. I guess she expects me to just lie down and wait for death. After all I am very old. At an age of 38, I'm sure I'll die of old age by 40. Please give your age and what bike you currently ride to help me prove my point. Thanks, Grandpa |

53 years old and just put 6500 miles on my Uly in less than ten days. I'm planning on cutting back on my mileage in about 30 years though if I'm feeling good I might push that back. |

It's not how old you are . . .it is how old you feel. If this is indeed the case, I must have been born in 1939 rather than the 1949 noted on my driver's license. In spite of this, motorcycles are my daily transportation and are at the gravitational center of my recreation as well. Own three of them . . .a 2007 Uly, a 1996 S2T and a 1974 Motto Guzzi Eldorado with sidecar. The only use my truck when carrying a load that the bikes won't handle . . .including an occasional person of the female persuasion that does not like motorcycles. Go figure. You might make some inroads with the SO by mentioning that at least one person . . . with two more decades on the clock than you . . .continues to ride every day, and has found that his passengers like the Uly backrest! One of the reasons I ride almost every day . . .is directly related to my trying to find the local Hooters, I just can't seem to remember where it is ever since I started carrying that pesky AARP card . . . 52, been riding for 25 years. At your age I was riding transcontinental on a Kawasaki Superbike. Check out this years Iron Butt competitors, most all are in their 40's and 50's. I think Dick Fish with his Uly is 65. It is easier to get forgiven than to ask permission, but if you crash it and get hurt the "I told you so's" could be intolerable to your sanity and the marriage. I am just glad I had been riding for decades before we met. She was not about to try and force me out of it. (Message edited by CurtyD on August 27, 2007) |

I'll be 58 in October, have had 19 bikes and recently sold a "75" Norton Commando, and a Kawasaki ZG1000. Currently riding my modified 2000 M2 and love it. Thinking about an "08". Went to a wedding in Iowa recently and hit 140MPH in my car! Wife wasn't to crazy about it, but to old, you tell me! Not a fan of the "GEEZER GLIDE"!!! |

Grandpa, What a fun thread you started. Lots of war stories to come, I'm sure. My forecast is that you will find the Uly is too OLD for you. Mostly a bunch of old fa*ts ride it. At your age, you NEED the 1125R which will at the same time meet Grandma's stated expectation; "not even a Harley, its a sportbike". |

53, Yamaha Vmax, looking into the Ulysses. At 48. my wife and I rode from from Miami to Alaska, roundtrip total 14K miles on the Vmax. Last year we went from Homestead(30 mi south of Miami) to Nova Scotia, 6k mile roundtrip on the same bike. At 38, old? |

One of the many reasons I chose the Uly is for rider and passenger comfort. My hope is that she will give it a chance so we can ride together and just have fun. |

38 is old??? Good gawd, I'm 43, still hardcore Mountain Biking, skateboarding, motorcycling and generally keeping my kids on their toes!!! I don't feel old at all! Heck, my Grandpa's 83 and he and I were just kayaking off the Outer Banks of NC last week. You've (hopefully) got a LOOOONG way to go before OLD! I commute by Buell nearly everday there is no snow involved (NEOhio)- I admit I have moved to the cushiness of a Uly from the sportbike stance of my Firebolt, though... -Mike |

I'm 42. One of my riding buddies is 62. We split up last year on a coast to coast ride and he ended up riding 1,300 miles in 24 hours to get back near home. She might have a point . . . in about 40 years. |

remind your wife that you're looking @ motorcycles and not at other women. being recently married myself i told my wife that i would give up somethings after we got married but don't ever ask me to give my motorcycles!!!! she might as well ask me for a divorce. riding is a big part of my life and i wo'nt give it up for any woman. riding since 1980 gone cross country a few times w/out incident wear all the safety gear took safety course planning trip to alaska with or without her chioce she said she is willing to go with. everyone dies not everyone lives got to enjoy your life while you can get the bike |

I've got tooth fillings older than you! 55 and counting. If I was 38 I'd be having an 1125R. But the Uly is the Swiss Knife of motorcycles, you could do a lot worse. Oh yea, you won't need any tats to ride the Uly either. |

Chris, So not so! There are certainly legitimate reasons to not ride - it is honestly more dangerous that shuffleboard. Being 38 years old is not one of those reasons. I expect that if a graph were constructed with curves for age, experience, reflexes, and maturity, 38 would be about optimum age. Insurance companies would rather insure you now than when you were 18. I have been quiet on this board so far because I have not yet bought a Uly, but I do know a little about this subject. I am 60 years old and have ridden since I was 12. I will ride so long as I feel like I am capable of doing it properly. I think you will find that there are a lot of enthusiasts on this board older than you. First, come to an agreement with your wife, then get the bike. |

And I bought my Uly 1 1/2 years ago as a belated 60th birthday present to myself. My wife wasn't happy when I first talked about buying another bike, but she loves it now! Dennis |

<one> My Wife LOVES the passenger accommodations of the Uly- my main reason for parting with my 'Bolt. My kids (13 & 9) ask to take the Buell anytime they need to be dropped off, as well! Any excuse for me to be on the bike is a good enough excuse for me! |

49 Got the Uly to companion the Goldwing. The Uly has become my primary ride unless the wife goes, she prefers the Goldwing. The Uly fires the soul! |

52 years old, 35 years as a licensed rider. Down to 9 bikes, not all currently running. Saving some projects for when I don't feel like riding as much. Wife has 2 motorcycles, daughter has 1. Maybe your wife thinks too old ! |

I think you should bring home a moo-moo and a hair net and tell her that she's too old for those jeans and that hairstyle. Then go buy what you want. You only live once. Don't forget the Bengay. |

I'm 40, been riding 3 years. The Uly is my 3rd bike. I think mine has 26,000 miles. I can't keep track, it keeps going up. mid-life crisis or something like that. Ah, people say mid-life crisis like it's a bad thing. It's really when you get old enough to realize how you want to live. Enjoy it. |
