As we move into the Fall, I have been thinking about adding heated grips and like the switch setup they went to for 2008. Has anyone ordered and installed these yet? If yes, comments about installation process are appreciated.

Hi Mark,

I ordered them from Andy at Appleton, but they haven't arrived yet - I was hoping to put them on this weekend.

I too am curious to find out what is involved.

Sounds like I should document the process and post it. I'll let you know how it goes.

-Ron

+1 here also Ron, I think a few of us less wrench worthy riders would love a quick write up. I had the same idea about getting them after this week when it was 32F on the way to work. Thanks,

Horr

Heated grips are ok but for real comfort all over the hand get the Gerbing electric gloves..heated grips are not necessary with these babies, plus they can be used on all your motorcycles, just plug them in and dial up the temperature...same for their heated jacket...there is no such thing as getting cold anymore...

Just got done adding the heated grips.

The kit consists of:

- 2 grips with wires leading to plugs
- 1 right side switch pod w/heated grip switch
- 1 packet with zip ties, c type wire clamps and a drill bit
- 1 jig for adding holes to mount the left side grip
- Instructions.

To install I just removed the front cover then removed the left side pod (one with horn and h/l beam switch) You will have to move the hand guards forward.

I cut the grip off the left side. It was glued on pretty good on the bar end side, I got it off tho.

I took the provided Jig and slid it up to where the switch pod was and used the drill bit to put 2 holes in the left side bar. These holes will be used to secure the left side grip so it won't rotate. I had to loosen the bracket holding the clutch lever/mirror so it could be rotated out of the way for drilling.

I took off the jig and slid on the new heated grip and then side the rubber back on the end of the grip and screwed in 2 of the provided screws to the newly created holes.

I assembled the switch pod back and put the clutch lever back to where it was then routed the wire up under the gauges.

On the right side I removed the switch pod (just 2 bolts on the back side of the pods) and unhooked the throttle cables and then unplugged the old right side switch pod from the front of the bike. It was just one plug that came right out.

I then was able to slide the old grip off and put on the new heated grip.

I put on the new right side switch pod and routed the wires back under the gauges to the front of the bike under the flyscreen.

The throttle cables just slide back in and hook right up to the new heated grip and then reassemble the right side switch pod.

I then went up front and the right side switch pod has a new harness that plugs in-line with the power for the aux power plug and then another plug goes in the spot where the old right side pod plugged in. The last plugs you will have to do is to plug each grips wires into the new right side pod's wiring harness.

Clean up the routing of the wires with the clips/ties provided and button it all up.

It took me under an hour to do. Very easy with a little mechanical skill. The directions are good and should walk you thru it if you are not sure.

It is warm outside, but I was able to feel the heat when I put them on the first and second settings.

Later.

unless you want factory i suppose.

i've had these for two years.
performance is great and the price cannot be beat. i think i spent more on the drill bits to install the switch.

will roast the nuts of a squirrel on high.
that is if a squirrel has his nuts on my grips!

I was thinking like Chinook but only with the heat troller added. Here is a kit for that still a fraction of the factory cost.

I'd love to have a Uly with the factory grips but I'll share something with you . . . over the years folks have use those wrap-on grips with GREAT results.

At $30 they are tough to beat . . . . and if you're willing to break the rules a bit and wire them in parallel, not series (may be the other way around, I don't recall) like the instructions say, you can make them so they nearly glow.

: )

Just make sure you buy the motorcycle heaters, and not the ATV heaters. My dealer sold me the ATV heaters by mistake and they melted my throttle tube, which made it almost impossible to turn the throttle! I thought it was kinda cool at first, "Hey cruise control!", until I tried to slow down for my exit and I couldn't turn the throttle!

I've had heated grips on my BMW's for years and they're OK. They tend to fry your palms and the back of your hand freeze. I finally bought heated Gerbing gloves that plug into the heated vest. There's a standard plug for the vest on the right side of the seat. The glove keep your entire hand warm. They are a little bulky but its worth it.

Just got my grips installed at Wausau HD/Buell. There was a bit of a sticker shock, but it was well worth it. On low they kept my nubs warm and comfortable on a rainy, overcast fifty degree ride.I have spent too much time in laundomats warming up in the past to think twice about this decision when I heard they came out with factory grips.
I hope never to ride in any weather again without them. Say what you will but in rain or cold weather it is the only way to ride.

+1 on the Gerbing gloves, toasty! Although, I imagine the grips are more convenient.

I just got my grips installed too - by destination in Tacoma, WA. Yes SPENDY as shit. But I like the installation and quality - stuff I could never do on my own and the switch is in the perfect place.

For those that are getting the factory kit retrofitted at a dealer -- just curious.

How much total damage installed $?$?

Homeslice,

That is a pretty amazing number of hours given that Prubert above did his in less than one hour. What's up with that?

Damn, 1 hour to remove front fairing, 1 hour to install, 1 hour to put fairing back on?

I think I would ask to talk to head of service. Seems to be a really excessive charge.
