I've been thinking about improving the headlights on my Uly because the morning commute is now mostly in the dark. Along a river. With deer everywhere. I don't have much money so I was wondering if it is possible to adapt H3 bulbs so that there is 2 low beams and 2 high beams. Will the charging system be damaged? Does anyone have any experience with this demented plan? I've learned a great deal of helpfull tech stuff from you all and respect your opinions and experience very much. part of the problem in putting in a different bulb, is the element may not be in the proper place. Theoretically the element is positioned to use the reflector's design to its maximum. You may get more light, but it wont be focused very well. I agree that the headlight is pretty poor compared to todays standards. | ||

The new 1125R has boo-coo lights. This is copied from Buell.com 1125R has a 70-watt low beam (Two bulbs, each 35-watt), 140-watt high beam (70-watt low beam with additional two bulbs, each 35-watt) Ulysses has a 55-watt low beam, 55-watt high beam (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on August 24, 2007) | ||

I need to do some measuring but it may be possible to space the new bulb so that the focus is not affected. The main question I have is what effect will it have on the charging system. (Message edited by panhead_dan on August 24, 2007) | ||

Look up the current draw for both bulbs. Current should be close if you are worried about it. I think. | ||

The ones I was looking at last weekend were 55 watt each. This is exactly twice what the stock single fillament bulbs are. If I understand correctly, the Buell alternator charges at max all the time, shunting the extra zots to ground as the regulator demands them. If that is the case, the strain would only be on the battery and there should be no damage other than possibly running down the battery. Anyone know how close this is to right? | ||

I hope they have improved that. They are a higher quality light though. | ||

Dan, make sure that you adjust the headlight to the proper height. I am guessing that the shop techs dont do this as part of the prep, since my headlights were not even close to being right on delivery. | ||

+1 on that adjustment thing.....after all of the complaining here I figured that the lighting system sucked. Not true .... it's ok ( but just ok) ....after adjusting the angle of the light up it was much improved. You'll need a T27 torx screwdriver. There in no need to remove the black / orange faring. There are 3 openings which allow adjustment if you get a T27 with at least a 6 inch shaft. | ||

I had to adjust the lights after I took delivery also. I hope the silverstars last a while because $37 for a couple of light bulbs makes me feel like a chump. So far I have noticed a couple of things about these Silverstar bulbs: 1- They mess up my eyes a little. After I shut the bike off, everything is blue for a while. 2- I can see with the new bulbs somewhat better than the h7's. It is noticeable. 3- The reflection from signs and the eyes of animals is way brighter. |
