Bike has 10700 km's, went for my first tire change and asked them to look at the rear bearing. Service guy said it was toast and the scheduled me for a replacment.

Bike has never had rear wheel off since bought in March of this year(2007).

Asked the service guy how he did the rear wheel procedure.. (I actually watched him do it) He did it by hand, 30lbs first.. Loosen and then 50lbs.

We've had a couple of these that are failing with the initial tire change. This would seem to mean that we either have a bad set of bearings or the factory is not following the proper procedures for installing the bearings.

Or they are getting moisture or water in there.

I think I'll go with the more substantive description...

I'm doing a tire change in the next couple of weeks. At 16k miles, I don't think I want to wait any longer for these beeotches to fail.

Just replaced my rear tire (first time the tire was off) last weekend. Bearing was fine at 5,500 miles. I will be keeping an eye on it.

I was wondering if anyone has ridden their bike for a reasonable amount of time and felt the rear hub area to see if it is getting hot. I felt mine after riding about forty miles the other day and it was fairly hot. I could put my bare hand on it and hold it there, but it was at the limits of doing that. At the same time the front hub was just warm to the touch. It was a 95F + day.

My bike is an '06 with nearly 20,000 miles on it. I just replace the rear tire for the third time. I have personally torqued the axle each time to spec. The bearings, with the wheel removed are quite hard to turn by hand but do not feel rough. The grease is very clean and there is no sign of moisture.
