Maybe the locations for the ECM and the Interactive Muffler servo that is on the airbox cover should should have been opposite where they are. I don't know how many of you have ever observed that Muffler servo working by riding without the fake tank cover but you really have to be using that throttle hard to get it to work. The ECM would be in a much cooler environment up there (assuming that it needs to be cool, anybody know??). How hot can that ECM get without it creating problems?? I wish someone from Buell would answer up on this.

I would say that the ECM is pretty heat resistant in Buells. I can't remember a rash of ECM failures.

I know in cars that many are located behind the glove compartment on the backside of the fire wall or under the seat. It would seem that the desire is to keep the ECM cool, dry, and protected.

The ECM probably consumes less than 1 Watt of power, so temperatures less than 180F shouldn't really present any problems. I wouldn't worry about it.

Good observation on the servo. I'll have to run the same demo to verify, but I'll go ahead and open my big mouth [whether I have to insert my foot remains to be seen]:

The ECM is comparing 2 maps, and going with the higher value. If you are at 2.5k or 3k and only at 50% of your available power, then the solution is servo-closed. Even if you are at 2.5k and asking for 100% of your available power, the best solution is still servo-closed.
Only when you are above 3k, and asking for more than ~80% of the max available power, would the best solution be to open the servo. I'm even thinking that if you are riding on level ground at a constant 5k, the best solution could still be servo-closed; it just depends on how complicated they decided to make the control logic.

If you are doing a max acceleration, then the servo should start opening at 3k.

If you are using the stock ECM, and you wire your valve open, you should actually lose power for the vast majority of load cases. Yes, your bike may sound louder, and therefore more powerful, but I'm thinking that you'd actually be making less power.

I'll have to pull the cover and do a demo!

I did it because I had no idea if it worked or not. Kind of dangerous to watch it while getting down on the throttle. Be careful.

I ran it without the cover and the servo does seem to open a little later than I thought it would, but I am no engineer. I figure Buell knows best.....I also put on an aftermarket muffler that was pretty straight thru that made much more noise, and I don't really don't mind noise, if the outcome is worth the racket...but I felt the bike ran better stock...so the stock muffler is back on...and I just ride it.

I'd wager that the way I normally ride my ULY the darn thing rarely if ever opens up. I had to really work the throttle when I had the cover off to get it to work and then I only saw it open a couple of times.
